Rebuilt the engine in an 05 ram 4.7. had just bought truck and previous owner said they ran it hot so I bought it and rebuilt engine. It had water in the tank so I drained it and put fresh gas in. Started it up and ran fine. Ran great for a day and a half then the check engine light came on. P0344 cam sensor intermittent. OK bought a new bwd sensor at O'Reilly's and nothing changed. Reset computer and light stayed off for about 3 miles then back on. Truck still ran great just couldn't go over 2500 rpms. This was a Monday. Wednesday on my way home after getting of the interstate the truck just lost all power. When I noticed this I slowed down to turn off the highway I was on and the truck started bucking and really didn't want to move. Got to the side street and stopped and checked codes. Now it's a p0340 cam sensor circuit. When my friend got there with the trailer to load it up I tried to crank it and it backfired real loud. But I got it started and onto the trailer and to the house. After I got home I noticed that the backfire destroyed the air box with the air temp sensor in it but the intake manifold seems OK as far as I can tell. I picked up a bwd crank sensor today to go ahead and swap it out and i put the old cam sensor back in also to see if it made a difference and it did at first. I was able to crank the truck up and it ran OK but not great like it had been. Turned it off reset codes and nothing. Have to fight with it to crank it and it idles like ****. And still p0340. Going to check Monday if the local dealer has a cam sensor In stock. But any other ideas what it might be that I should check. I have not check the wires gets as my meter needs a battery and I keep forgetting to pick one up.

Just thinking out loud here. If you just rebuilt the engine, double check your timing chain alignment. Maybe you installed a tensioner wrong and it has jumped. You've already thrown a new sensor at it. Go back to the last thing you did.
