Got some nice presents yesterday, but the best was from my truck LOL

It threw a ****-fit on me yesterday on the way to my parents. Kicked and threw itself out of cruise and the engine light came on. Stayed on all last night and remote start wouldn't work. It is still on this morning, so I hooked up the superchips to see if it would pull any codes. Got two of them.

P-0308 Cylinder 8 Misfire
P-0339 Crankshaft Position Sensor Intermittent

My truck is a month out of warranty. Has anyone had to replace this sensor? Just wondering what it will cost.

From what i Have read its a $50 sensor, and should be fairly simple to get to although I have not found a clear answer as to where exactly it is located as the options that pop up are 3 different locations.

Sorry to here bout the bad luck at a time you don't need it! Don't know the cost of that sensor but if it helps, a Map sensor is about 35 Bucks so fingers crossed Wendy its in that same Range! (Edit: didn't see Ryans Post...LOL..)

This is out of my manual. Doesn't look like a big deal to change.

5.7L V-8
The CMP (cam) sensor is used in conjunction with the
crankshaft position sensor to differentiate between
fuel injection and spark events. It is also used to synchronize
the fuel injectors with their respective cylinders.
The sensor generates electrical pulses. These
pulses (signals) are sent to the Powertrain Control
Module (PCM). The PCM will then determine crankshaft
position from both the camshaft position sensor
and crankshaft position sensor.
The tonewheel is located at the front of the camshaft
(Fig. 8). As the tonewheel rotates, notches (Fig.
8) pass through the sync signal generator.
When the cam gear is rotating, the sensor will
detect the notches. Input voltage from the sensor to
the PCM will then switch from a low (approximately
0.3 volts) to a high (approximately 5 volts). When the
sensor detects a notch has passed, the input voltage
switches back low to approximately 0.3 volts.

I would start with a PCM reboot and see if the codes came back. Check grounds clean terminals. Charge the battery. Get a good base line and if the codes came back then change the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Good luck

Thanks for the replies guys. The truck seems to be running fine, but the light is still on and the remote start will only run for about 5 seconds then shut off.

I am going to clear everything and see if the codes come back.

See if the codes go away, but more than likely you are going to have to pull the plug on cyl. 8 and check it and replace the crankshaft sensor. There was a few posts about someone having your issue on another forum (pretty much exact same codes and symptoms) and thats what they did to fix the issue.

sensor is located on the passenger side, bottom of the block, above the oil pan, in front of the transmission bellhousing.

Sounds like it will be an easy fix, but since it's 15 degrees outside and the truck doesn't fit in either garage, I just decided to have the dealership look at it. Going to take it in Thursday. The remote starter thing is kinda bothering me as to why it's not working, hoping it just has to do with what happened, so thought it best to have them look at it, even tho it's gonna cost more $$.

ok, what are you doing on Friday? I'm working and it's supposed to rain, so if you wanna come over and fix it, I can supply the umbrella LOL

Thanks. I'm hoping that's all it is. I can't be spending money fixing this thing when I need to be spending it on mods ;)

ok, so I just returned my truck to stock and guess what, no engine light and no thrown codes.

so, I put the tune back on to see if the light and codes would show up....and nothing.

Could superchips have caused the codes then they were erased when I tuned it back to stock?

should I still take it into the dealer?

I've had the truck tuned for almost two years, I wouldn't think the superchips would just start causing problems on the truck?

wow, well, I decided to just run the truck stock for a while and see what the truck will do.

If I don't post on here for a while it is because the f'ing MDS has made me crazy. :)

Could have been a glitch, if you reset the truck to stock it probably cleared the code. I would re-install the SC and run it for a while and see if you are still having the code pop up and if the remote start stops working again (that is if it the reset didnt fix that too).

yeah, it must've cleared the code. I put the truck back in tune and no codes showed up. The remote start is working also. I'm thinking that the SC has something to do with whatever is going on because the truck did this same thing back in the summer but I never coded it and the engine light went off in a matter of a hour or so. I figured that was just a glitch, but now that it's done it a second time, I'm beginning to wonder if it's the SC.
