The resistor fools the computer into thinking the air intake temps are cooler then it really is, thus adding fuel. I would not do anything with the cat unless your going deep into the motor doing mods that call for that extra flow. Are you looking for MPG's or more power?

More mpgs, I just swapped my engine had to put a newer 4.7 in, and my cat is clogged up from the old motor running too rich, id really like to keep the best mpgs I can

Pick up a high flow aftermarket and have a local muffler shop install it

This. If you completely remove or just hollow out the cats you run the risk of not meeting emmisions. Removing the cat can also create other problems, one of the biggest is that NO reputable mechanic will touch your truck with it missing. A good high flow cat will not affect your mpg much if at all.

We dont have emissions in florida, mechanics here wouldnt care, but thats not my concern. My concern is keeping my gas mileage and my truck running properly. But no codes would be nice. I just paid for an engine swap so I have to wait till I can afford am after market cat.

my factory cat was stolen a few years ago, replaced it with an aftermarket cat, it was a universal cat the muffler company had, i found a brand new uiversal cat an idividual is selling for 35.00 its a steal, and its brand new. i guess it didnt fit his application, im not sure if its a high flow cat or not, but i guess its better than nothing

Being an 02-05 4.7, you should have a 2.5 inch, single in/out cat on there stock.

Should be a simple sawzall on the welds and weld a new one on.
That's what my exhaust guy did when he replaced my cat.
