Hey everyone,

I've been looking into this subject for a little while now and I was wondering everyone else's opinion. I currently have a Dual Exhast on my 2007 Ram 1500. Although it is not a true dual exhaust as it looking like the owner before me wielded a new pipe onto the exhausting system. I was thinking about switching to a single exhaust system. I've had a bunch of friends tell me that a single exhaust is the way to go. That it helps give off more power and a loud sound.
I'm really looking for opinions on the subject to help me decide what I would like to do.

Thanks everyone

With the HEMI engine a single exhaust works best. You can achieve the duel exhaust look out the back, with a single inlet/duel outlet muffler. The true duel system doesn't provide enough back pressure which causes a loss in low end torque. This will make the truck sluggish on takeoff. If you go with Headers, you add a Y pipe which connects to the muffler and from there you can run a single 3" pipe out the back, or run two 2 1/2" pipes out the back. Remember, if your trucks emissions are visually inspected, you will need cats installed in the Y pipe. My system uses a single inlet/duel outlet muffler, with duel pipes exiting on the right (passengers) side, in front of the rear tire. I have read that not running cats in the system causes a foul smell, noticed especially, when running at idle.

Harley Harrold,

So a true dual setup wouldn't be the greatest? I like the sound of a true dual setup with two glasspacks but if it messes with back pressure then maybe it's not the route to go. Very informative reply .. Have you tested out the true duals?

Currently I run a 18" glasspack 3in and 3 out swapped for the stock muffler.. I like it for a single pipe and have gotten lots of compliments. Seems like I have a little better acceleration when I put the throttle down about 3/4.. Was only 100$ for me too.

Duals can work just fine, the problem is most people get pipes that are too large. For duals on a stock motor you should stick to 2" or 2 1/4" diameter.

Thanks Harley, A friend of mine has the same setup as you do. Although I'm not sure what muffler he has. As for myself I've been looking into doing the single inlet/duel outlet setup with duel pipes coming out the passengers side, two 2 1/2" pipes. Do you have any recommendations for Mufflers. I was thinking about a Flowmaster 44 series. I know there are other options just not sure what I want.

Magnaflow is quite popular, and a few people use the Gibson mufflers. Check out Youtube and pick out what you like best.

I will be replacing my current exhaust system with all stainless steel parts from headers to tail pipe tips. The system I am looking at will run me close to $2,000.00 complete. The Headers are American Racing with 1 3/4" primaries, and 3" collectors, Y pipe, with cats, and Gibson muffler, dual tail pipes, and tips. This system will also exit on the right side in front of the rear tire.

or do the best of both worlds...run duals all the way to muffler and then single out...o, you say you want it loud? throw dual cutouts on there as well :)

I want it loud but i doubt ill be able to go with that step up. I would probably get pulled over so quick lol.

Looking at my muffler 10 min ago I notice I have installed already single inlet/ dual outlet muffler, with two pipes going to different ways to the back. Im wondering if I could just change the piping and have it come out the passenger side before the tire.

Now my other question if I do new pipes I would have to do new tips right?

Im also not sure which muffler this is. Like ive said before the truck is loud. Just wondering if changing it would be needed.

Looks like a flow master to me. Probably a 40 or 50 series.

looks like a flow master or a knock off of a flowmaster. a magnaflow or straight through design would make just a touch more power but nothing dramatic. all my mods were chosen to make power and for racing in mind so i doubt my input would be as help to ppl looking for daily driver exhaust, but the best feeling exhaust i had with stock cam was my hedman longtubes, matching 3" catless ypipe and a single in/dual out magnaflow, still made lots of power down low and good mid to top range power. i switched to true dual 3" right before my larger cam and bv heads and it lost on the low end for sure but is really nice now with the bigger stall, cam and heads. was just to much exhaust for a smaller cam, small stall converter and stock heads....... hope this helps, but unless you plan to run a large stall and a good size cam, a true dual setup is not needed and will lose you some low end

and the hedman headers are a 1 5/8 primaries which is a touch smaller than the pacesetter or arh 1 3/4 . that actually helps make more low end with the smaller primarys and is great if you plan to stay natrually aspirated. which is why i went with them and have netted me great gains. i picked up almost a half second in my 1/8 mile time with that exhaust setup

Low end power loss= lower top speed? I'm gonna sound stupid there but I'm trying to learn. I'd love to do true duals but don't wanna mess with losing power..

Run 2-1/4" duals and you'll be fine.

It will sound good and the smaller 2 1/4 will work fine. Anything bigger will mOst likely result in negative gains

Single pipe is usually louder than duals.

the beauty of my setup is that with cutouts closed, my setup is quieter than most exhausts except stock...then I could choose to open cutouts to as loud as I want..

Okay so going with that statement a single inlet/ dual outlet muffler won't that achieve the same result as a single inlet/single outlet muffler. Because of the single inlet forgive me if this sounds stupid just trying to learn everything
