Hey guys,

I have had my 2003 dodge ram 1500 since 2005 and have never had a problem with throttle body icing. This winter got cold fast! like -15F for the past two weeks and I was driving home and all of a sudden my pickup went into limp mode and flashed the lighting bolt at me. No throttle response, rough idle and would barely run.

So i pulled some codes, P2174, P2175 and realized it was a throttle body intake problem. I then started pulling things apart and found the following;

Yes that is ice and oily sludge in the intake.... :(

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/hi2_3v9HpTpOhpWC3Zuqa5SwNpmHpupXFl9RDR-oiGU=w414-h552-no
and the throttle body looked clean! I beleive because the 2003 do not have EGR. PS this has 180K on it and i have never cleaned it.

So i let everything dry off and put it back together, put a new air filter in and PCV valve thinking this was the issue. It ran fine for a day then it started again... So I called a dodge service tech i know and he said the throttle body design had changed to prevent this. So i put a new one on and I havent had an issue yet but i havent put many miles on yet for fear of being stranded in -15F conditions... Also when i went to put on the new throttle body I found the PCV valve was frozen shut..

Any thoughts comments or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Aircraft get icing. It's caused by the vacuum causing the water to drop out of the air stream. You should check your air filter.

I have never seen anything like that or anything that would explain it happening. Looks like you have the original intake configuration. What does your oil look like? Do you happen to have vent from the oil filler tube disabled?

It is the original intake, the engine is actually completely stock... the vent tube is still connected from the oil filler neck to the resonater (hemi hat). Also the oil looks good, i only have 1000 miles on the oil change and it looks like i just put it in..

I just put a new air filter in.. the old one was dirty but not wet or iced up..

Look at the back side of that tb. That's where it will be gunked up.

Agreed, the crude will be on the backside of the TB. Pls post if you figure this out. Almost seems like water got into the intake. IDK...

I ended up replacing the throttle body (at the recommendation of a dodge service tech) and the back is just as clean as the front to my amazement. I really appreciate the input though guys and if this fixes it i will update!

I doubt that replacing the TB will do anything more then cleaning the TB you have. What did the Service Writer say caused the muck?

That's crazy...I just emptied the catch can on my 2013 and had that same nasty sludge at the bottom of the can. First time it's had that too...before it was just clean looking oil but this was the first time I've emptied since we've had consistent temps here in the teens in NY.

Good luck getting it figured out!

It looks like that due to the constant heating and cooling of the can.

Mine does it too, looks like coffee actually.

And yes, Texas DOES get cold. :flipthebird:
