The bolt actually didn't look broke.. it looked like someone had worked on the headers before and forgot to bolt that back on... like the bolt was still under the heat shield, I could see the head of the bolt.

Last year when I pulled my 5.7L the heat shields were hanging on by threads but the exhaust manifolds were still on tight. A few of the exhaust manifold bolts have a longer piece of threaded bolt sticking out so you can attach the heat shield with a nut. If the manifold is still tight you might be able to wire the heat shield up, use a nut with a larger washer or just take it off. If you remove it just make sure there aren't any hoses or wires close by that might burn up. Could order a replacement too.

I thought that is what it looked like when I got under there. Like the head of the bolt was still there. I'll look closer when I go back out later. Maybe a simple but will fix it.

Let us know what you find. I have never seen just the stud that the shield bolts to break off. Is the nut just missing? That stud comes off the head of the bolt. The bolt head likes to go away.

It does look like just the stud broke for the shield. I circled the head of the bolt and where the hole in the shield is.

Here's something else I noticed. When I turn the key to the on position now it doesn't ding like it usually does. I just hear an electric motor engage somewhere and then start it up. No dings.

Did some searching and people said they also had these shields only hanging on by one bolt and removed them. They all said that wasn't the problem, it ended up being there cats.

Hopefully the shield mounting stud is just broken. That will save some money. But there is no way the cat would cause that.

I may try to fab something up to keep the shield tight. Then if it works, I'll know that's the problem
