I have an 2003 Ram with ,unfortunately, a 3.7L. I recently rebuilt from top to bottom and that included a new timing set. When installing the main sprocket I couldn't help but wonder what held it on. Friends said the chains keep it from walking. Well I've had a noise and I figured it out when I took off the cover that the gear walks off far enough for the chain to rub into the cover. Apparently 53021171aa is what's missing. Idler retainer ring?? Discontinued everywhere. Anyone had this problem? I can't find any reason why it's been discontinued or what I should replace it with.

Have you tried contacting a dealership? Maybe they have an alternate part number or can at least give you the specs, you might be able to find a retainer the right size at a farm/tractor supply store.
