I just bought a 2005 quad cab 4x4 1500 hemi. Now...I'm not sure if it's a problem or normal as I have never driven anything with power like the hemi before. When starting off from a stop...it seems to like to hold onto first gear a little bit longer than I would think it should...then it feels a little hard when it does shift. I don't want to say it does it ALL of the time. Is it just me? I've had problems with the tv cable being wrong in my old camaro, and causing the same problem but this truck doesn't have any of that. It shifts fine into reverse and drive from park or neutral.

Any info would be great! Thanks!

sounds normal to me. these hemis love the higher rpms, its where a majority of the powerband is. so it might seem unusual coming from something different. if you want to be sure though. check your tranny fluid. it needs to be bright red, not smell burned, and filled to the proper level. these trannys are very picky about fluid. to check your fluid, park on flat ground, leave running, put into N (neutral) apply the parking brake and check fluid.

if its still bothering you. do a PCM reset, the computer will reset and then start configuring itself for the way you drive.

I asked the dealer i bought it from...cause i had the engine light come on. I guess it was too cold? I don't remember the code number. Any way to fix that?

But anyway... Could the cold temperature cause the trans issue? It has been about 6° here every morning for like a week.

I want remember exactly. Something about the temp or thermostat. Anyway i noticed that the radiator cap is still cool to the touch after driving about a half hour. Doesn't seem right. Overcooling?

And the trans doesn't seem to get better when its warm. If it gets warm. I did find out that it only does it when driving slow. If Im accelerating quicker its smoother.

On my 05 when it is cold the truck likes to shift higher to warm the truck up faster. From memory once warmed up if i start from a red light and accelerate normally it usually shift into 2nd around 2500-3000rpm. As far as firmness goes I can't really remember what stock was like as i know have a performance valve body on it so it shifts a lot harder/faster now.

As far as engine temps go, any way you can get/borrow a obd2 scan tool? if so you can get a direct number on the engine temp. my truck runs consistently between 198-212 degrees.

Also, for a PCM reset, easiest way is to pull the PCM fuse with the truck off. (I think around #28ish on an 05). Once pulled get in the truck and hold the key to the on position until you hear two separate sets of dings, then turn the key off, put the fuse back in, then start and drive.

Ill try those things. I also noticed that it doesn't down shift right. I think. Sometimes it doesn't drop to first unless i hit the brake. Not sure if i was rolling fast enough or something.

If you do not know when the trans fluid and filter was replaced do it now. The oem service intervals are fairly short and filter seating has to be spot on to manintain transmission performace. Also, the only fluid to use is AFT+4

I will do all the basic fluids. How often should the transmission fluid be changed?

50-60,000 miles, or less if you do some harsh driving (towing, racing, extreme temps, etc) i think. i did mine every 30k
