The exhaust on my truck was already on it when I bought it. It was set up as a true dual, but then molded into one 18" Magnaflow muffler, and split by a y-pipe again.
I was just wondering if there would be any advantages or disadvantages to changing this, and splitting them up with two mufflers, and running both separately out the back.

Pictures of how the exhaust is run (Back to front):

Eddie, from your pictures it looks to me that you have a stock "Y" pipe and exhaust back to the muffler and then a "Y" to split the tail pipes. This is pretty standard setup. The other common setup is to use a single in/ dual outlet muffler which eliminates the need for the tail pipe "Y". I am envious of all the real estate you have under your truck..

I second Nick, just change out the factory Y for a magnaflow. Unless you plan on doing alot to your truck what you have will be fine.

By all means, replacing the header "Y" will improve performance. Actually you could use the rear "Y" pipe in the front and then just replace the muffler with a si/do muffler and you would also have another version. Still not true duals but and improved exhaust system

just add a ypipe after the cats. the stock one is restrictive
So basically, where the cats come together, just add a y-pipe instead of the straight one, and have two mufflers?

That actually is the plan eventually.
