This past weekend a friend and i tackled putting in my sony 701hd. it wasnt the easiest job but it is possible for the ones out there that want to swap out the factory head. personally, to be able to never use the cd player in the bottom storage bin again made it all worth it. (pictures are garbage, actually a sunny day and all i had was my phone, sorry)

Since there are no kits available we had to rig up a mounting plate. First you have to cut out the stock bracket since the 3.0 unit is only single din
IMAG0931_zps06b9dee4.jpg
we just used tin snips on the bottome piece then rigged up the new cage in place

IMAG0945_zps3e9ed0a9.jpg
at the harness all i did was tap/soldered into the speaker lines, power/ground.IMAG0943_zps7c7416b4.jpg
I had an unused plug that i found the illumination off of by the climate plugs(just hanging free). voltage for the illumiation wire will vary from 2 to 11+ volts when you adjust the guage cluster knob. my truck has two lighter/accessory plugs up front, one constatant one key on. i soldered on to the one for key on for accessory. A multi-meter is your best friend on this job.

running the power is easy, just go through the grommet next to the brake booster
IMAG0940_zps94495eac.jpg.
I did the speakers as well

IMAG0935_zpsf6fcde21.jpg
placed the crossovers under the dash

IMAG0937_zps2b185ce4.jpg
We ran a backup camera to the handle on the tailgate(guessing that is where the factory one sits from the convienent spot to put one.)
IMAG0951_zps3e3fea64.jpg
tied everything in behind the tail light
IMAG0953_zps535e1b50.jpg
i fiberglassed my own box for a JL 10 W3v3 4ohm

IMAG0910_zpsa0d66b13.jpg
just placed the amps under the seat, nothing crazy.
IMAG0958_zpsde8e971b.jpg
put the bluetooth mic up my the mirror and finished off the head unit by putting some flat black strips of plastic to fill out the opening with backing strips behind them.
IMAG0956_zps1f1c6792.jpg
there are two little gaps at the sides of the deck that arent noticable to anyone unless you point it out, but once a kit is made i will most likely swap it in.
we tried to tie in the factory usb cable but didnt have any luck so i just dropped one into the sliding bin under the climate controls. I placed the ipod connector in the glove box and used an xm kit since the factory plug is funky and we couldnt get it to connect to the aftermarket unit. just placed the new xm ant. under the dummy plate at the center of the dash.

All in all, i couldnt be happier with the system. it sounds amazing and looks pretty good for my taste. Not the easiest install but it is possible.

Thanks for posting that up, I have the same 3.0 factory setup. I am just not as adventurous as you so will probably wait for the kits to come out.

If I may, I am curious about speakers, especially in the doors. What size are the stock ones? What kind of plug?

thanks guys. the doors are 6x9's all around. i went with a 6.5 two-way system in the front so i could replace the small dash speakers with tweeters. i just used scoche(think thats the brand) speaker plates to change it up.
the plug is a standard factory two wire socket type(male/female). i just soldered jumpers to the new speakers to retain the factory clips.

Nice work!! That install looks very clean? Is the fiberglass bowl shape factory or did you make a resin mold out of the empty cavity to fit your application Very nice install

i made a mold then cheated a bit and went to my cousins(boat builder) and used his chop gun to beef it up a bit :p That made short work of the Box. capped it with MDF and cleaned it all up. The box hits way too hard for my aging ears so i hardly turn the sub up lol.
If i did it again i wouldnt of rounded off the front edge, i would have made it more angled like the pocket. i just got ahead of myself and im nit-picking...it really doesnt bother me at all.

How did you figure out which speaker wires went to which door? Just hook them up and adjust settings for each pair of wires?

Did you just make the strips of plastic from cutting out of something else or can I buy strips of plastic that fit the opening?

Really like the install. Is that just a standard double din cage you used in the dash?

Metra has finally come out with a install kit with wire harness for the 2013 Ram 1500 express.... Hell ya so over this stock stereo, only you can't order it through them only dealers that deal with them, so i went down to my local car audio place and showed them the site and the stock number and should be here some time this week.... Went to best buy and they had no clue what they were doing just a bunch of damn kids. You can go to the Metra Online | Welcome to Metra Auto Parts Online Warehouse web site and put in your year, make and model make sure when you click on select vehicle you put in RAM not DODGE..... here is the stock numbers and info if you need it..
