I wired the turn on from the relay to the battery directly and the relay is getting somewhat warm... Is this normal? It's a 120a relay.

can you send a link to the relay you used? Also where did you get the turn on signal from?

I assume I need to wire to a switched source and being wired directly to the battery is what's causing the heat?

yes. a relay is a switch. when you trigger the relay with a low current wire it opens the terminals 87-30 so the battery power will flow through. when terminal 86 has no power then the current can not flow through 87-30

So to ensure I understand the message your conveying, I need to put a low current through the switch and not the battery itself, correct?

terminal 30 goes directly to your battery (in your case the breaker). 87 goes to the "sub fuse panel" (powers it). 85 goes to a ground, 86 goes to an ignition source (cig lighter something that turns on when the truck is on).
