I seem to have a copy magnet turned on high in my truck. I don't really want to spend 150-500 for a radar detector.

Has anyone run those cheap cobra radar detectors? Are they worth it?

I had a Escort 8500 detector in my car but took it out due to the number of false positive I was getting....drove me nuts. As the Escort was a mid grade unit I can only think that the cheaper models would be even worse.

Unfortunately you really get what you pay for when it comes to detectors. If you are looking for one on the cheap then you need to look for used ones because everything new that's worth anything is generally $400+

They wont tell you if a cop is coming. They will only tell you if there is a cop using his radar in the area.

But there are plenty other ways to catch you speeding. You are better off just doing the speed limit or slightly over.

You'll be selling that radar detector to cover your next ticket and lawyer fee..I've been there with a top of the line radar detector when I was 17, they don't make you speeding ticket proof

Haha that's what I ment... idk just be nice in California the cops are pretty chill on speeding just don't go over 10 over, and swerving to keep speed. Just when I go out of state be nice to have some sort of alert

yeah i mean they will work most of the time(depending on the method being used by LE)..don't let them give you brass balls. As for the cheap ones...they work way less then the expensive ones. Plus they go off for everything where as the pricey ones will learn they fake alarms.

Even the expensive models can give you a false sense of security. I have a $500 model and it works great 95% of the time. However if the police officer is using laser you will not know until it is too late. I only use mine to check myself Incase I am speeding. I normally go 5 over and that's it. An acquaintance of mine has a $50 model. He rides with it unplugged due to all the false alarms it gives off. You might be fine with a cheaper model but if you plan on trying to speed with it, you will be slamming on your breaks way more often than needed and that's an accident waiting to happen. I love mine but I no longer speed on purpose with it. Not worth the risk buddy. Also if you do get a ticket while you have one in your possession (atleast in Louisiana) you cannot have your ticket fixed to get it off your record.

Don't cheap out on a radar detector....V1 for the win.

Radar don't pick that **** up lol

"Don't Break The Law...."

You may want to see what States they are illegal as you wouldn't be able to use them in those States....

Radar detectors are pretty much useless when its all said and done.

By the time laser hits you - you're busted.

I have both a Walmart cheapy and an Escort. Both work on the majority of radars in my area (k, Ka band). The pricier escort will detect all bands 4times as far away as the cheap one. The cheap one will pick up several hundred yards away on flat land. The Escort can pick up 1/2 mile away easily in hill country and much farther on flatland. The problem is some agencies use pop and laser radar detectors and your radar detector can't detect what is not on. You might get lucky and the cop try to hit someone with the laser out in front of you and it set your detector off alerting you to the threat. The best advice is to stay under 8 over and you'll avoid most tickets on the highway. I try to keep it under 5 over in the city. I use my detector mainly to keep me alert and have hit the brakes only to look down and I'm already running right at the posted limit. Police can time you between to known distances via the air or parked cruisers. Some locations use video assisted traffic patrol that are very efficient at catching would be speeders. Again, the best advice is to not blatantly break the law.
