Did you see this?

Whoop! Conversion done! 2016 Rebel from a RA2 to a RA4. Only one real anomaly, the screen wonkiness..... Technical term <G>. I originally tried just the radio, all the features "seemed" to work but the buttons just seemed off and were slow, sometimes didn't even work. I did some searching for a calibration way and found the up, down, browse. Issue was I still had my RA2 bezel, that didn't have those. I ended up just temporarily patching in the new bezel, cable and hvac module. Fired it up, did the calibration and everything works great.

I did do a full radio reset from the engineering menu. Fired it back up, had some "learning" phases it went thru. One time the NAV button was gone, it had a screen off button instead. The NAV was still present on the radio and worked fine, it was the shortcut button that was missing. Turned off te truck, turned it back on and the NAV button was back.

Prior to the reset temp slider had a temperature, it appeared to increment by 2 degrees. After the reset that doesn't have the degree anymore. I'm sure it's a setting in the engineer menu, just haven't found it yet.

Outside temperature display, that went away after the reset. Found that setting in the engineering menu, that back now.

All XM subscriptions are active... hopefully they don't catch that.

Uconnect, doesn't work. My guess is because I don't have the cell antenna, using the fixer plug.

Couple other things to note.
1, All the trim on the passenger side. None of mine needed to come out as the guides indicate. Not sure if it's only needed for the 4 speed conversion, mine was already 7 speed. Z The only trim I had to take off was the side of the dash.
2, Passenger vent. No need for that to come off. I didn't need to, HVAC module went right in behind it.
3, 7mm open end is your friend! Use that for the inside screw on the HVAC module.

Thanks to Grimm for an awesome harness! Thing is a masterpiece!

I just held down where it said "Display temp = false", while holding it it changed to "Display temp = true" and the temp popped up. Now I don't know if it was a fluke and the radio was still learning, but if a fluke it was a good one since I was holding it when it changed!

Not trying to resurrect a dead thread, but I noticed that my compass (8.4 no-nav) stopped working a week or so ago, both on the radio and the dash display - it just shows -- there, instead of the heading. I have done nothing to my truck, save getting an oil change and resetting the oil alarm in that time. I wish I could think of what I may have done to cause it to stop working, but I cannot. I have an active SiriusXM subscription, through the installed system. All other UConnect features (that I use) seem to be working fine.

Anyone else have similar experience, and can offer some thoughts on getting this feature restored? Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Shane

First and foremost WELCOME to the Ram Forum Sir !
No worries on the old thread resurrection

Question #1
. Did you go to a dealership for the oil change ?

If so they likely flashed an update to your truck .... which for some reason disagrees with your current set up.

#2 do you have an overhead console ?

#3 is your instrument cluster the no frills 3" or premium 7" cluster

#4 is the 8.4" RA3 radio original oem or is it a conversion upgrade?

Hey Shane--R.L.K. kind of covered all the bases with questions that needed to be asked! :happy107:

Please let us know if we can assist if you do need to return to the dealership.

Thanks for the quick responses all!

Okay:

1. No, I went to Jiffy Lube
2. No overhead console
3. I am assuming the 3" cluster on the instrument panel. (I wasn't aware there was a 7" one!) - yep, after googling it, I have the 3" one.
4. no, the 8.4" was in the truck when I bought it.

Did you purchase the truck new?

Correct me if im wrong but your truck was equiped new from the factory with ....
..a non Nav 8.4" radio
..no overhead console
..a 3" no frills cluster
And you've had a compass heading in the cluster and radio ?

Hmm this is interesting .

No, I bought the truck used from a dealer.

If it helps, I can post pictures of the inside of the truck - which part of the description seems to be inconsistent with the norm? I also know that, while my first Ram - same year - had the 5" non-touchscreen Sirius-ready radio WITH backup camera, this truck has no backup camera, although I would assume I can add one sometime in the future...

Also, is there a place where I can search for the specifics of my vehicle as it left the assembly line, maybe using the VIN? I do know that the lady who bought the truck new sent it to get the windows super-darkened...maybe she had something else added post-purchase?

Thanks for your attention!

You can get a build sheet for your vin # , there's a site posted here if you look around , maybe search build sheet .

You can easily add the factory backup cam if you want , many of us here have .

I am interested in a pic of your radio and bezel and steering wheel and instrument cluster .

Do you have audio controls on your steering wheel?

And there are buttons on the back of the wheel for volume, track, etc. Sorry for dust, I drive 53 miles to work each day :)

Looks like you have a 2014 Bighorn with a factory 8.4 radio ( Ra3/Vp3-Na non nav).

Yes there's a dedicated how to thread for Installing OEM Backup Camera by Cptwing. In addition to the OP, be sure to take a look at all the links and tips I have gathered up in post 10...

Shane your truck does have what is considered the overhead console. It is where your sliding rear window switch is located. On another note you can add the factory Homelink/Compass module and it will work plug and play. The comands will come up on your EVIC when you press any of the three buttons. The CV2 sales code should already be installed in your truck for it to work. Your Compass module is mounted to the back of the overhead console. By removing it and replacing it with the Homelink/Compass module you will be ruling out the compass as an issue plus you will be upgrading to Homelink. This is a picture of the Homelink I installed in my truck. You can pick them up pretty cheap.on ebay. If you do buy one make sure it's from a 13 or newer Ram. It is not hard to change. You just slide your fingers in from the side a little towards the front and pull strait down and it will pop off. You should be able to feel where in connects. After you have try ed all of the other methods suggested and it still isn't working you may consider taking it it for a dealer reflash to see if it cures the problem. We have seen this happen before with some trucks. I have even seen it happen in brand new trucks were the dealer has no clue why the compass heading wouldn't work. Good luck keep us posted.

^^^ This was my situation,
Compass never worked consistently if at all in my truck. Original dealer replaced the overhead compass module ... No change (blamed it on my portable xm radio), I replaced it with one from RLK, no dice, then gave up after some troubleshooting of my own. I did realize that if it didn't work when I started the truck all I had to do was turn the truck off and back on again (quick key cycle) and it would work everytime. Weird.

Had the truck into the dealership for another issue before warranty expired and they said there was a compass direction error code. Don't know what they did, but it has worked everytime since then without fail (4 weeks now), and with my be portable xm unit installed.

I think they reloaded the vehicle configuration to the BCM which I have heard sometimes take a few attempts before it takes, ie when adding remote start or backup camera sales codes.

Thanks all. So maybe mine, which worked fine for the first almost year or so, just gave up. I will look into replacing mine with the homelink version.

I switched the stock 2017 Ram Express dash display to the EVIC 7. Where compass should show, only two dots display. Any ideas? Thanks.

It may need calibration? If I remember correctly the procedure is to open the driver's door and make several rotations driving to the left (essentially driving in tight circles in a parking lot). I could be completely mistaken though.

No, I didn't. I was wondering if I had to or not. Would you have the part # and info as to where it goes? Thanks.
