Hey yall, I'd like to invest in some dash cams for my Ram and other vehicles.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'd be looking for one that's motion activated, one that will automatically record over the existing memory when it's full if i don't download it.

I'm not sure what I'd have to do to get it power or if you just charge it when the memory is full?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
G

Most dash cams have a loop feature, which saves event loops of selectable time intervals. Mine is set at three minutes. When the memory card is full, it restarts from the beginning and writes/records over older data info. A few models have a capacitor instead of back up battery which I'm led to believe is better in very hot environments, but I don't think you can set them up to record motion detection as the capacitor us only good for a minute or so. Go to Amazon and do a search on dash cams as they have tons of them, many decent models for under $100 along with extensive info and reviews to help you make your choice.

that would be mine, i have it wired to come on with the ignition, it has the option for sensing motion if powered 24/7 but if you have one of these you would have to put a massive SD card in them to keep 12+hours of video on it, these kind of cameras usually record in short clips usually from like 1 min to 5 min clips, and each 3 min clip on mine is 280mb, mine records in 1080p and has live streaming to my phone where i can view live footage and transfer recordings to my phone (love that feature)

thats interesting that they tape over like a VHS, I hate to say it but it almost seems like dash cams are needed now in case of an accident, i dont know if you guys remember there was a guy on here who posted his dash cam video of a chick running right through a stop sign and messed up his Ram with his dog in the truck.

I would have to agree on that this is almost a must in order to prove yourself in a bad case scenario....I'll definitely be lookin into this for my truck and wife's car and maybe even my work truck to cover my ass if anything bad happens.

That's the one I have...great quality and has built in wifi so you can download clips straight to your phone.

There's a sample I took; quality was down-scaled to 720P because of the free editing software (I didn't need people to listen to my horrible karaoke of "You know my name" *****)

i like yours but it seems harder to conceal on the windshield, mine it tucked away at the top by the mirror so its almost impossible, and thats why i keep the mic turned off on my camera so that in the case of an accident they dont hear my use of 800 cusswords in 30 seconds or my horrible singing! lol

That's actually where I have mine. The camera lens is extremely wide angle and it adjusts up and down as necessary. It's literally just below the black plastic hiding the RVM mount. I'll snap a pic later when I get home.

nice, mine comes with double sided tape, mine mounts up in the factory smoked part of the glass and the camera is just on the bottom below the tint

I'd suggest this camera. It's a little on the pricey side, but if you get the GPS attachement, it'll tell you how fast you were going, and exactly where you were when watching the video over. It also loops, motion detection, and amazing quality ( i can upload a video if you want to see quality ). It does 1080 at 60fps nicely, even does 1440 if you need. It also has a G sensor, and if you get in an accident, it stores, and locks the file, supposedly it works, though, i've yet to have a chance to use that :)

I'd be careful with having GPS. You have video of car pulling out in front of you and there is an accident, with video you win.

With GPS, let's say you are speeding by 2 MPH, you stand a good chance of losing the fight. Why give the defense any extra ammo? Why give your insurance company any extra that they could use against you?

I personally have a Momento M4 in my truck, it has looping and 720 recording, motion, impact. and a rear facing camera.

I'm wondering about the heat, how these hold up. anyone have any experience with hot Texas heat and their dash cam.

reddit.com/r/dashcam lol...from what I've seen, you would want a capacitor based model versus one with a regular battery.
