Hello I just traded in my 02 ram 1500 sport for a 2011 1500 sport. My 02 had hids and I had a heck of a time with them. The flickered and would not work correctly. Had to add a resister for them to work but still had the lamp out code. Found that I needed 55watt ballasts and a direct connection with no extra harness for them not to throw codes.

My questions are first of what bulbs does my new truck need for head light low beam and fog light? It is the quad light (separate low and high beam). And second is do I need 55watt kit to not have a lamp out code thrown?

Thanks for all the help!

Your truck has H11 bulbs in the lows, 9005 in the highs.

You do not need a 55W HID ballast to work right, just the correct harness. ;)

I offer HID kits for our trucks, found here - 2009+ Dodge Ram HIDs - for "Quad" lights

Is there any kit that does not need to install a harness? I put a 35 watt kit on my 02 and it needed a harness with resisters. Took them out and put a 55 watt kit and it didn't need a harnes or anything. Literally a plug and play kit.

There are some plug n play (no harness) kits out there. I simply don't trust my $700-1000 computer with a cheap set of HID ballasts that have no protection (from a harness). The harness to me is simple and cheap insurance.

Ok so what does the harness actually do?

it provides constant power to the ballasts, and only uses the stock wiring as the "trigger", vs pulling power from them. Dodge uses a CANBUS system that (at times) will send a pulsed signal to the lights, which can cause flickering. When the power is drawn directly from the battery, through a relay harness, this helps minimize that issue.

And, the big part, its just not pulling power through the thin wires at the headlight.

If you think an aftermarket harness is expensive, try replacing the stock harness after you fry the wiring because the HIDs pulled too much current through the anemic stock wires.
I'm no schill for JJ, but the man speaks the truth.

(I went so far as to make my own harness using 16 gua wire and dual-output Bosch relays to power the headlights on my car, to get as much of the 14.4V to the lights as I could; it makes a difference)

Ok so with the harness it is not going the throw lamp out codes correct? I used a harness with 35 watt kit in my 02 ram and had issues with flickering and lamp out codes. Had to put a resister in line and that took care of the flickering but the lamp out was still there.

I installed a 55 watt kit without the harness and had no codes and no flickering at all.

your 02-05 is a LOT different setup than these.....

Harness will not throw a code.

Ok is the canbus connector/decoder necessary for proper functionality?

In going to get these but don't want to fry anything

really isn't a "decoder", just the right combination of capacitors, resistors, etc to ensure proper functionality.
