My air bag light came on about 3 months after I bough my truck (2012 5.7 1500) new, it would come on and off all the time. I took it into the dealership and they did something with my wiring and it stayed off for about a year. It comes on and off at random. I just hope it doesn't disable it or something in the event of an accident.

Hi 2012Ram15004x4,

I checked for TSBs just to see if something stuck out, but I didn't find anything similar to what you've mentioned. I did, however, see that there was a recall for the steering wheel wiring that involved the airbag. It may not be linked, but I wanted to mention it. Do you know if that recall affected your truck and if it was completed? You can check https://www.mopar.com/en-us/my-vehicle/recalls.html if you're not sure.

That is a pretty silly thing to hope for. The whole point of the light is to let you know there is a problem with the system. Pretty clear it won't work as designed in an accident.

If the airbag light is or was recently on, there will be trouble codes in the system. Check for codes and it will point you in the right direction.

Actually that is not true. You can have an airbag light with no DTC's. I've checked and had a friend that's a mechanic check.

The light doesn't turn on for no reason. There will be trouble codes in the airbag module. You need a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module.

I tightened all the connectors under seats and that took care of my problem. Not sure which one was lose but it worked. If it comes back on I will have my dealer check it out.

Xtreme545,
I made the thread a few months back for the connectors under the seat... Generally what happens is when something slides under your seat or gets caught on the harness and you move the seat, your airbag light will come on. My Ram did the same thing and threw a code for drivers side seat airbag... After the dealer replaced it, it still did it. For the fix, either buy some trailer connectors (or any other durable multi-pin connector) and you can make new connections over that cheap harness Ram made for under the seat, OR you can get some zip ties and adjust the harness. Without adjusting it and taking a minute with it, the light WILL come on again...

I know this thread's been running for several years, but it came up in my search last night for this very issue. After reading these replies, I wanted to confirm that I, too, fixed my persistent airbag light by simply wiggling the wiring harness under the passenger seat. I haven't yet gotten around to looking closer at the connectors, but at least I know where the problem is thanks to this thread.

Yellow connector under seat towards rear. Dang thing always need wiggled. If wife drives she moves seat. Will always trip light. Sometimes a good bumpy dirt road will do it also. My son sitting behind me with his big feet will kick it also. So basically it just likes to get knocked lose lol.

I just recently had the same problem. I also just checked the connections under the seat and made sure they were tight and the light went off. Glad I can finally sit behind the steering wheel and not worry about the air bag going off in my face driving down the road lol

People tend to over dramatize the airbag system. Airbags won’t just randomly deploy because the light is on. Infact it’s warning you that if your in an accident 1 or more restraints may not deploy.

That said I’ve found the most common problems with 3rd gen rams and 4th gen rams are their poor connectors under the seats. My 12 ram has an issue at the yellow connector, got that fixed now it came up a few months later. I suspect it’s the side airbag in the seat, and the wires are damaged. It only started happening after installing headrest monitors. I think I jiggled the wires too much anchoring the wires.

I fixed it until I installed the center console with floor shifter. It came on about a month later. I do have a kid who’s feet tend to go under the seat and play like kids do. So I suspect it’s that connection again. Many many people have reported that being the main problem is the yellow connection under the seats.

To fix these it is highly recommended to disconnect the battery and let discharge the SRS system for about 15-20 minutes. I have however unplugged the airbags with no issue and plugged them in. Sheer luck maybe! But you’ll need to disconnect the battery anyways to get the airbag light to reset. The SRS module has to retest the equipment to ensure its good then will go off.

I’ve done a ton of mods to my truck and have run into many issues that the manufacturer cheaped out on. Like the airbag wiring and connectors.

This happens a lot to pretty much all Dodge, Chryslers, Jeeps and Rams. The airbag wiring and connectors going to the thorax squibs (seat airbags) are cheap crap. Unplugging then plugging back in is a short term fix. Replacing the jumper harness lasts a little longer. Replacing both seat harnesses for both seats seems to be the consistent fix all. It's a very intermittent problem so a guaranteed fix is hard to come by.

Just dealt with mine. Off and on and do on. These tiny issues are why I laugh when truck companies advertise how TOUGH their trucks are. Mine went off when I hit some washboard on a gravel road. Furthermore this must not be a serious issue or they would have offered a recall. Could you imagine the pr nightmare if they knew about it, which they do, but never offered s recall for a airbag safety issue. Not good.
