Ok I am getting quite frustrated with my '15 RAM Big Horn and the dealership. Since October '16 I have been getting this stupid code every month. First time the dealer flashed an update... Came back a week later! took it back in and they replaced the ESIM. Good to go...for 2 weeks then it came back. Back in the shop, tech told SA that the gasket rolled and they fixed it, that was January 30ish.

IT CAME BACK ON YESTERDAY! :biggun:

So I took it back in and asked to elevate this to the Service Manager. My SA (who has taken very good care of me btw), explained the situation and brought her over. I calmly voiced my frustration with this ongoing issue to the SM. She then trys to explain that many things could cause this including software updates from Dodge. I said that I know that many things can cause this but on a 1.5 yr old ram I should not have to deal with this every month....

It felt like all the SM was doing was giving me excuses not making me feel confident that the issue will be resoved FOR GOOD!

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to VENT a little.

I asked the SA if they replaced the gas cap on one of the prior trips and they said no.

I had a Tundra for 8 years and the only thing I did to it was replace 2 gas caps.

Is your vehicle still at the dealership, and was replacing the gas cap considered/done after you asked?

Yes my Ram is at the dealer now. I dropped it off yesterday afternoon.

It was explained to me when they did the ESIM test it failed so they replaced it and not the gas cap.

Thanks Kori. I really do love my Ram but I am getting frustrated.

Well, it's either the gas cap, the evap canister or one of the hoses coming in and out of the evap canister that is loose or possibly has a crack in it.

Check this out...it may be helpful:

Also the fuel tank/pump. I've seen a few 13+ trucks with cracked fuel pump housings at the top causing a evap leak.

Diagnosing evap leaks can be extremely simple or mind blowing tricky. The code you have P0456 is a small evap leak, which can be the hardest to find. What makes it hard is that the leak test that the PCM will go through can not be done with a scan tool. Reason being that the parameters that need to be met are very particular and on average it actually takes about 2 weeks for the test to be completed once.

The way to test is either fill the system with smoke and visually inspect for the smoke leaking out or fill the system with a small amount of air pressure and monitor the pressure for the leak. I've dealt with some leaks that I've literally pulled each individual piece out and leak tested them severally. It was an absolute nightmare and took forever. Just recently Chrysler has also completely revamped the diag process for small leaks. It's a completely different process then the old smoke/air test.

The other things that make it difficult are ambient temperatures If it starts to get a little colder then usual we see a rush of evap leak problems. Something that may have been sealed when it's warm can now leak due to the drop in temperature.

I know this may not help you much but just so you know what they might be up against. It's either a difficult leak to find or someone's just lazy.

Yep I got what you are saying. They did the smoke test that led them to replace the ESIM. That is when the gasket was "rolled" and didn't have a good seal. That was January 29ish.

The SA call me yesterday and said that the smolk test showed the ESIM again so they asked me if the shop forman could do an extended test drive and testing. I told them do what ever they need to do to fix it.

I will find out more tomorrow.

Please let me know how the extended test drive goes. If you want to send me your VIN and dealership, I can also call and see if I can offer the help of our corporate techs as well, if the dealership has not already engaged with them.

I have a 2016 Ram 1500. The light came on at 8600 miles. The dealership replaced the ESIM. I just got my baby back yesterday and after reading this thread, am hopeful that fixed the problem.

Good luck with yours though!

That was the problem on my '04. I would intermittently get leak codes. It would come back after a week, and sometimes after a month. I went through a couple gas caps. The dealer did smoke and other diagnostics. Took the tank down and tested all the components individually supposedly. They couldn't find the effing leak anywhere. When I took the 26 gallon tank out to put in a 34, I discovered that I needed a new pump/sending unit. The sealing surface was cracked all around under the seal ring. Chunks came off when I pulled it out.

Evap purge solinoid. Most techs won't find it with a smoke test because it leaks into the intake

Purge solenoid is actually somewhat common on 13+ trucks, they changed to a different style. Not hard to find by any means, just pop the hose off and see if it's leaking through it. You'd have to be a pretty crappy tech not to know it's a possible cause.
