I've had that drip one both my trucks with 3 different transmissions and I've come to the conclusion that it's just something in the design of the engine. I've pulled the trans a few times and checked the inside of the bellhousing and the rear of the engine and it's always been clean.

Since I'm boosted I found it's more pronounced when I've been in boost a lot and pressurized the crankscase but it's been a lot less of an issue since I installed a crank evac pump. My working theory is that it's weepage past the rear main seal in my particular case.

Mines been leaking there since new...2 bottom bolts were loose close to 1 full turn...Stopped for awhile...Then started again...Re-tightened the same 2 bolts again...If I drive like a granny there is NO LEAK...When I have to spin the motor up over 4k+ when merging onto the interstate, or prolonged highway drive @ 2500+ rpm towing, I have a drip on the driveway the next morning...My theory is higher rpm's are pushing the oil out....

Well that's what I thought when I noticed it under 1k miles when I bought it. Then noticed it all the way thru to 22k miles which it's currently on. Dealer says they didn't see anything. However during the last 2k miles since dealer visit I haven't noticed a weep or drip yet. Perhaps the tech tightened it? I believe it's the bolt closer to the passenger side.

Mines never dripped on the garage floor., Just slightly wet as per the pictures I posted. It's definitely not engine oil in my case.

Slightly loose engine to transmission bolts would not cause any sort of leak, unless they were all loose enough to actually cause a gap between them which could cause the torque converter to slip out but if that happened there would be much worse problems.

Last time I didn't change my engine oil until it was approx dark in color ( rarity for me ) engine oil was black almost. Yet the drip was tan in color. I even have a picture of it on a plastic applicator indicating that it was oil based as it never evaporated. Still , I'm not bothered about it that much, it's been noted on the system at my dealer so should the Tranny pack up within my 100K drive line warranty then I may have some recourse.

Thanks for your input fella.

If you have a UV light you can shine it on the fluid. If it glows its transmission fluid. The 8 speed fluid has a dye in it that will glow. If it doesn't, its engine oil. Of course this only applies if you have the 8 speed.

Yeah I do have a black light. But residue was already cleaned off by the time I learned of the stock UV dye in the tranny oil. The dealership did at the time however add UV dye to my engine . I wasn't even aware until I was doing an oil change a few days later. 20160808_231515.jpg20160808_231542.jpg

Lol they added dye to the oil? That kinda will make it hard to tell if it's transmission or engine now since they'll both have dye in them. They just may not have known about the dye in the 8 speed, not many techs do know that although they should.

I just bought a 2014 big horn crew with the 5.7 hemi. It has smelled "hot" since I bought it. I've popped the hood and the radiator cover was really hot to the touch. Regardless, I found a leak spot on the garage floor this week. Second week of ownership. I'm not sure what to think about it. Seems strange to think a truck with 30k miles would have a leak. Could the dealership have overfilled? Any idea on other things to look for? It's going back to my dealer to get Bilstien 5100s installed on Tuesday. I'll have them look it over for obvious leaks. I suppose they could have even spilled oil all over the engine when they changed it causing the hot smell and a bit of drip. Hoping for good luck. [emoji51]02ca1ffcc2fbd94c0c0efcf9fb304bfe.jpg

On the 4wds the oil filter is literally right over the front differential. They may not have cleaned that off. But I'd still have it checked out

Is this different than a 2011? I never had drips from that ram with the hemi. I cleaned up my floor tonight and found about three drip spots, definitely felt oily. Each about 2x2 or 3x3 inches. Could the crap they spray on an engine To make it clean and shiney be dripping? Feeling irritated by this. Putting the bilsteins on tomorrow and ordered katzkin leather. Hate to put so much into a truck that leaks oil. Call me weird. [emoji53]

I can't say for certain, but I do know they switched front diffs around that time.

I hope you're right. I almost want to see it for myself to know it won't be a lingering issue. Just oil they didn't clean up well.

Gawd damn, this is not good. When I purchased my truck on 7/17/15 A week later I detailed it and also checked and got myself familiar with the engine and drivetrain. You know, getting dirty under the truck and all. I noticed a little black like old oily area and wiped it dry to review later.

Well, today the same spot. Check the pics.

Funnily enough, I also received a survey about my new truck from Ram, they wanted to hear all about it. So I mentioned all the issues with paint and body also as well as this.
I have a new 17 6.4 hemi 2500. I will be checking first thing in the morning

So I had the bilstien 5100s installed today. They looked for the leak, but just cleaned it up and put uv dye in the oil to trace for later. I'll watch for drips and see if there are some, I'll take it back and have them trace the source.

New BAK revolver x2 tonneau cover too. Starting to look better. Leather seats in a week or so. They are on order.

I forgot to mention that they told me today that the truck had the oil pan replaced under a recall/service bulletin. Maybe that's part of the issue. Any bets it didn't leak before the recall? [emoji57]

I couldn't help but to get under the truck and look around. Easier with the bilstiens. Seems like the leak may come from the upper manifold. Plenty of oily dirty grime in that area. Seems like that isn't the only issue. This very loose bolt is in the engine to transmission area. Yeah, the dealer has to see this. fb205ff883d5cf7c7132e5cce64a2cfd.jpg. I wiped things down very well to get an idea of where this may be coming from. Too many oily bits to pinpoint one spot right now.

That's for the inspection cover. Probably forgot to tighten that one when they were inspecting for a leak.
