I havent had a check engine light on my truck since i purchased in new in 2014. 2 days ago, the check engine light turned on and the gas gauge dropped to zero (even though i had at least 3/4 of a tank). Got a "fuel sensor fail" message across the EVIC. I put some chevron Techron and some premium gas in it the next day, and cleared the code and all was well. The following day the check engine light came on, but the gas gauge appeared to be working fine. Same code; P0463. Any idea if this can be a big problem, or if its likely some bad gas? We're going out of town on our honeymoon in a few days and planned on taking the truck.

It's a common issue. Fuel level sensor needs replacement. I have yet to see it being wiring or module problem.

I'm guessing the fuel tank needs to be dropped for this? Is this something a local shop can do without breaking the bank?

Unfortunately FCA hasn't been smart enough to put an access panel in the bed yet, so if you have a little mechanical aptitude, socket set and a jack then you can do it yourself fairly easily, just make sure you have an empty or close to empty tank. Shops around me charge around 300$ parts/labor.

Was the Techron the Techron Plus? Reason I ask is the Techron Plus has a cleaner in it specifically designed to clean the fuel sender sweep contacts. I'd try that before dropping the tank and replacing the fuel pump module

I'll try the techron plus 1st. No harm in trying that route.

Looks like I'll have to replace the sensor and might replace the fuel pump while the tank is dropped.

if i remember correctly the dealer told me it was all one unit when they did mine under warranty

i dont think its the gas, this seems to be a problem in 2014 mostly, im betting it was a bad production batch of pumps, i haven't had any of my friends have any pump failures on their trucks that weren't 2014

Did the pumps themselves fail? Im headed out of town and tracking the gas by miles. Hoping i dont end up stranded.

my pump never failed, and i drove for over 2 weeks on mine, i took it to the dealer 3 times before they finally replaced it all...

i dont think its the pump failing, i think its just pretty much the fuel level sender

When the check engine light is on, and the fuel gauge is saying empty, the truck runs better than it usually does. It's more responsive, almost like some kind of eco mode is off. Is this a thing, and if it is, how can I get muy truck to run like this after I fix the sending unit?
