New to forum and newly purchased 2013 ram 1500 Laramie. It's a 4 x 2, 5.7 liter with 8 speed rotary shifter and 3.92 rear axle ratio. I'm not sure if its just me or the normal characteristic of the truck and a 8 speed trans but my question is regarding down shifting or shifting around 1500 rpms. I apologize for my ignorance too but while driving if I'm at 20mph, 40mph, or 60mph if the truck is around 1500 rpms it seems, feels, or sounds like it needs to down shift or is in the wrong gear. Does anyone if it is just normal characteristics of this truck or if there is a issue with trans. It's not anything that would just jump out at a person but my OCD happens to kick in and notice little things from time to time. Any info is welcome or opinion. Thanks...

The 8 speed does a good job at keeping you in a good rpm range. I'd say it's normal

Much appreciated Csanders. Just not use to the low growl almost like its about to start go dead because it needs to downshift. Then when I pick up the accelerator its almost to much to the point that passengers in the truck think I gunned it.

It's possible that your software is not up-to-date. There was a TSB released to improve vehicle shifting. If this is a great concern to you, it might be worth a trip to your local dealership to discuss a TCM update.

TSB NUMBER: 21-008-14
GROUP: Transmission and Transfer Case
DATE: March 08, 2014

SUBJECT: Flash: Transmission Shift Enhancements

OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with new software.

MODELS: 2013 DS Ram 1500 Pickup

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with the 5.7L engine (Sales Code EZH) and the automatic 8-speed transmission (Sales Code DFD).
