i have a 3rd gen ram and i have gotten a check engine light. theres a simple way of doing it without a scanner all you have to do is put the key in the ignition and turn it to the on and off position 3 times(dont start it) the 3rd time forward if there is a code it will display it on your odometer rescan again and either give you more codes (if multiple codes) or say done even if there are no codes itl just say done on the this can also work on the 02 generation jeep products that i know of and possibly newer year rams too

The key trick, on, off, on, off, on, quickly will tell the computers to display the error codes in the odometer window. When you do this, make sure to have a piece of paper and pen ready. If there are no codes you will see a PdOnE and an EdOnE and they will look like this. The key trick does work on most Chrysler products, yet those before 2001 it may only show the P codes and not the E codes. I am not sure if the key trick will work on other makes of vehicles.
