My "new" used 2003 1500, 5.7 Hemi, has been in my possession for only 2 weeks now. With it came a fairly good maintenance record. Ol' Blue runs great, idles smooth, no smoke. I couldn't see any tune-up, (spark plugs), since around 90K miles. I went ahead and got the new (16) spark plugs, but wonder if I should change them out. It has 144,210 miles, no smoke, starts 1st turn of the key, shows about 11.6 mpg. What do you think?

Your mileage is fine for the year. I have a 2004 with the hemi and get 12 mpg. Plugs need to be changed every 30,000 miles

The spark plugs in the 5.7 need to be replaced every 30k miles, so you're almost double that. Replace em. Only use regular old copper plugs. The 5.7 doesn't like the fancy iridium ones. The cheap copper ones are the best for this motor.

Holy crap we all responded at the same time lol. This thread was empty when I started typing.

Thanks, I had read to only use the copper plugs and that's what I got. Appreciate the input, once the weather breaks, it will get done.

Have patience near the brake booster. Using a low profile wrench and two 3" extensions makes it easier to get at those back two.

It does look tight around the brake booster. My socket w/rubber insert holds the plugs well once they're loose. When I do it I'll have all my extensions and swivels at the ready. On the spark plug wells in the past, I use a short piece of hose to get the plugs started back in. Thanks for the input, appreciate it.

Anyone remove or loosen the inner fenders to reach the plugs near the firewall? I've never done but heard that it has been done.

I was just going to say that. I remember fighting with cyl 5 and 7 for hours when I did my plugs.

Installed a set of long tube headers not long ago. Had to pop the fender liners out. And I noticed that 5 and 7 were right in front of me. They come out pretty easy. Id deff do this for the driver side at least.

I did that when I changed mine. It made cyl 5 a little easier, but 7 was just the same, since you have your tire in the way. Wasn't much of a trade off for having to take 34 million tiny screws out just to get the liner off lol.

I would assume one would remove the wheel. Lol.
They have maybe 6 screws each if I recall

If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that it has to do with getting a more complete burn of the fuel and emissions.
