After driving on the expressway for about half an hour, I get a clicking noise when I turn, coming from the rear wheels (seems to be both but not at the same time, one side one time, and then the other another) . Any ideas of what it could be?

Check your driveshaft u joint. If that's good it may be the rear end and you'd need to pull the cover to inspect it

Sound is most definitely coming from rear driver side wheel. Pulled the drum off (more like it pretty much fell right off after removing tire) and everything is ship shape.

years ago, my 76 PW w200 had popping noises coming from the rear axle at slow speeds. I tried a bottle of the friction modifier for the Sure-Grip, but it still made that noise. I eventually found another non-Sure grip Dana 60 for it and swapped it out.

So you're thinking the spider gears are shot?

no, not necessarily. In my case, maybe yours, too, the clutches are sticking momentarily, hence the need for friction modifier. Maybe, just a lube change on the rear axle will help. If nothing else it'll give you a chance to inspect the spiders, etc.

I would drain the rear end fluid & refill with a good synthetic oil. Check owners manual or your parts house for recommended weight. Then add a bottle of posi-track additive.

My 99 Dodge 2500 QC 4x4 owners manual calls for synthetic oil & the additive.

Check the oil level. If its pretty low or zero your diff will need a rebuild.

Not necessarily. It is a chance but without popping the diff cover & looking its a guessing game as to what will be needed.
