First snowfall of the season, and also first time ever driving my own truck in the snow. I love it! (I had a 1992 camaro before this. I loved that too.) Couple questions though...

1. Should I hear a wine from the front end (most likely axle right?) When it is in 4wd?

2. It is the shift on the fly case...so how accurate is the name? Can I shift it while driving? If so...do I have to slow down? Put it in neutral?? How does it work??

Thanks!

Gonna guess you have a 97 ram...

Either way, i wouldnt shift into 4hi, much over 35/40 mph, and to shift into 4low, you need to be stopped, with the trans in neutral.

You will hear increased noise, and road feel through the steering wheel, but it shouldnt be a whine noise, id bet your ujoints need some servicing.

you can do a max of 60mph in 4hi even says so in the manual, and as long as the tires arent slipping just let of the gas take it out of 4hi into 2hi and you will be fine, i do it when i race people lol slap it into 4hi, punch it for that extra torque to the ground, then at about 60 i let off the gas for a split second throw it out of 4hi and floor it again. no issues here. is yours a stick or a knob? guessing since you are a 97 its gonna be a stick. and as far as the noise while turning mine kinda whines when i turn to sharp then skips across the ground if i just crank the wheel. hope this helped lol oh also my 01 was the same way, shift on the fly never had any issues with it either.

Well man some people that post mobile can't see the names to the side.

So to help ya out from a guy that has pretty much the same setup:

You can go up to 60 mph as said before for shift on the fly. Or safe reasons I only go 50 max before shifting. Most of the time I do it at a stop to give the shift collar a chance to engage before I hit anything nasty. But if you do see something come up you can be moving and shift. As for the whining it is normal to hear noise up front as a whine or a whirring. You will also feel pull on the steeringwheel. Coming from a camaro you will notice that you can't turn to full lock on the snow and hold the wheel while in 4hi. This is due to the axle and U joints. I don't reccomend turning full lock in 4 hi.

Just as a note 4wd does nothing on ice. Some people have the illusion in their head oh I have 4wd I can do anything. Please don't be that guy. Also you shouldn't go over 60 in 4hi in the snow. This is not only dangerous to the drive train but also you. If you have any more snow driving questions just ask. Hope that helps answer your questions.

I understand it now. Yeah, I'm used to the steering lock to lock issue. The camaro has the same thing where it'll bounce if its full lock. Thanks guys!
