Frame and axle rust

Just bought a 96 4x4 Ram. I can't find a bit of rust in the body, and the floor pans are nice and clean, but the axles and frame have a pretty even coat of surface rust on them. Nothing cancerous, but just curious is this common. Did Dodge not botther to paint the frames and axles? I'm thinking of going the POR-15 route with it.

So does Dodge just not paint the frames on their trucks? In comparison, my Chevy frame was all painted. I've got a Mustang too and everything is painted but the rear axle.

It's painted I think but much like any other vehicle have you ever known anyone to was and wax their frame?

I live up here is snow and ice Idaho and never had a issue with rust even though they use large amount of salt and Mag-Cloride...

All I do is wash the under body once a week regardless of the weather or temp. Just rinsing the frame down and keeping the mud off helps a bunch.

Oh yea... Tire Chains are for sissies...
