Ok, I'm not really freaking out but its not suppose to do that and I'd like to fix it. So what happens is I turn on the car or move it to aux or whatever have you and then I'm able to remove the key. It doesn't turn off the car or anything in fact the car seems to give no indications it realizes the key isn't there at all. Its sometimes an issue mainly because sometimes when I turn the car off I still get that annoying beeping when I open the door telling me my key is still in even when its not. One time though I thought it was just that and left my lights on, didn't kill the battery but it took a little to turn over. Is this an easy fix? is it a symptom of a bigger problem? I need your help, suggestions, tips or a fix action would be very much appreciated, if you have a fix action with pictures and its cheap/easy to do I'll say a little prayer for you every night.

Crap wrong forum... its a 2001 can a mod move it to 2nd gen please...my bad, couldn't find an option to delete.

I've seen this happen to old cars, like 60's and 70's, when the ignition switch gets warn. It doesn't hurt anything, other than being able to remove the key while its running from what I've seen.

If you have a spare key, you should try it to make sure it isn't an issue with the key you're using.

If its the switch you could get a new ignition switch installed. A locksmith could probably rekey so the same keys still work.

Yeah I have 3 keys does it with all of them, you said the word locksmith but I saw $lock$mith$ if thats the case I'll probably just deal with it. I was hoping more along the line of there is some washer or plastic piece lose or a screw that needs tightening, you know simple cheap stuff.

Should just need a new ignition key cylinder. The parts are cheap, but would cost more if you want it to be rekeyed to your current key.

oh sweet, sorry I misunderstood the first poster, so a new cylinder would come with keys so I'd just chuck my old keys and have new ones, that works for me, I may do this, thanks for the help!

Yup, it'll come with two new keys. You'll just have a different key for the doors and ignition.

Don't chuck you old keys unless they don't open anything else…..like the doors, tailgate, or storage. The new keys that come with a new lock cylinder won't fit any of those other things. That would be the motivation to get it rekeyed to your existing keys.

Yup mine does the same thing. I see it as an advantage tho lol. I can run out and start it up in the winter, pull the keys and lock it.

You know when I first posted about tossing my keys I really didn't think about them being needed for the door still, boy did I feel really dumb when the next guy posted that.

It is kinda nice, I do leave it running and pull the keys and lock the door all the time, but it still kinda bothers me, its just not suppose to work that way is all. Haven't decided what I'm going to do with it yet, its probably more than I want to spend to get it rekeyed and there is no way in hell I'm carrying around more keys.

Happens to a bunch of 2nd gens.
No problem with it unless it just bothers you too much.

It bothers me $65 but not $100+, if that makes sense. I can live with it for the cost it would take to replace it.

I did it once on a '79 vette I owned.
I bought the replacement ignition cylinder from a GM dealer and brought it to a local storefront locksmith along with my old keys.
Took him about 15 minutes and he charged me $20 to rekey it so my old keys worked in it.
Then I went home and installed it.
This was about 10 years ago.

Edit: on the vette there was a different key for the doors anyway, but I had the original keys for the car and didn't want to use the newer style keys on it.

The old school GMs had the square head key for the ignition and the round head key for the doors/trunk. I still don't understand why they did that.

Exactly! And I had some fancy set of square keys that they gave to the original purchaser of my vette, so I wanted to keep them.
