Hi all. I am the new happy owner of a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Laraime. It has 126,000 miles. I got it for cheap, but realized it was probably gonna need some suspension work.

When I run over bumps (big or small), it sounds as though I have chains dangling beneath the front end (near both front tires). So last night I drove it on ramps and started beating the suspension parts with a rubber mallet trying to replicate the sound. NO LUCK.

I did notice though that the jounce bumpers from that arm that runs along the top of the coil spring were missing. *Missing jounce bumpers.* I took pictures but am not able to upload at this time due to size issues I believe. But it would be great to see pictures from you guys of that general area.

Any help of my general suspension issues or more specifically my jounce bumper issue is most appreciated. I am happy to be on this site and I look forward to many great conversations with you all in the future.

2wd or 4wd?

Here is a pix of a 4wd, it might help you out. If 4wd check the u-joints in the front diff one on each side also check to make sure the shocks are tqed to spec.

From the factory, there isn't a bumper there. It's a metal to metal contact point.
(the one between the coil and brake line in the above picture)

I'd check your steering linkages first, especially if it's lifted.

See big red thing hanging from the frame?
That's your bump stop.

Also, unless you're going over some sick nasty dips, you won't be hitting those.

I'd be willing to bet you've got control arm bushings that might be dried out and/or ball joints.

thanks for the replies. it ended up being loose shocks. I can move them up and down and replicate the chain sound. I'll be putting new ones in this weekend and I'll update you all with the results.

Good deal. What shocks are you putting in? Just wondering.

If anyone cares, I just put in Monroe "Reflex" shocks in my 97 4x4, ex-cab, stock-height. Had many Rams, and these are the best I've found for a sane price. Very happy with them. Good price on Amazon.

I use the NAPA premium shocks on my trucks, because they are one of the few places that sells heavy duty truck shocks and has a catalog for applications other than light duty pickups & vans. On the 98 Ram 1500, I use the shocks for the 98 3500 chassis cab models in the 10,000+ gvwr range. They mount the same way as the stock ones, but since they are made for a much heavier vehicle, they are much firmer than the stock half ton shocks. It makes the ride and handling much tighter and 'snappier', and controls the bounce and dip pretty well when driving off road on rough terrain just like a lot of those premium off road shocks, but without the premium price. I think the ones i use sell in the $20-$25 each range
