Rattling Sound Under the Truck

im asking this for a friend. He has a 2000 1500 with the V6 4x2. Truck has just under 90k miles. When the trucks in gear idling it makes this loud rattling sound. its coming from under the truck right around the exhaust next to the transmission. the sound goes away with higher rpms and when going down the highway at higher speeds. when the trucks off you can shake the hell out of it and not make the sound. any ideas? were pretty stumped. my guess is something in the exhaust but not sure.

Does said truck have a convertor? If so, its shot, or will be.

I'd look for a loose heat shield too, mine did same thing and it was heat shield. But my mom has a Dodge Ram van and the converter is shot in it and makes the same noise you describe....

Agreed. Mine is starting to make the same noise along with others. Hoping it at least holds out until classes are over in May...

mine was the crapped muffler and I have a noise from the upper shock bolt.

It's auto. I guess we will Start with the exhaust and if it still makes the sound then we will know it's the converter. I had the converter
Go bad in my 01 Dakota with the 5.9 and it wasn't the same sound as this trucks making. I'm not sure how similar the drivertrain is. What's the auto transmission in the V6 rams?

last time my truck made sounds like that it was form zip ties a buddy of mine put all over my drive shaft at work as a joke

ive pulled that prank a few times before so i know what was going on as soon as i pulled out

but for some one that wasnt aware it could drive them crazy trying to find it

mine make the same sound from the catalytic converter, get under there when the truck is off and just hit the cat with your hand and if that's it you'll be able to tell.
