Things that often wear out:
Steering / Trac Bar in the front
Balljoints

Things to inspect:
Make sure the heater works. Crank up the defroster and if it smells like coolant, you likely need a new heater core. That's a lot of work (minimal cost if DIY, just a LOT of work)

Make sure all the power gizmos function. Don't just roll the window down 2" and say "yea it works" full range of motion. Test the power mirrors, everything.

I like to make sure I push every button at least twice on a test drive.

If it has a dash mat, look under it, Gen IIs are notorious for cracked / destroyed dashes.

^Hit the nail on the head for most stuff.

Can't forget the plenum and transmission issues as well.
