New to the forum. I need to swap out the tranny in my 97 1500 4x4 Extcab Short bed with a 5.9 and an auto tranny. Is the same tranny used in 2wd models and is tranny used in 2500's or 3500's?

Same transmission is used but a 2WD transmission is different as it will not bolt to the transfer case.
You need a 4wd transmission.
46RE used in 1500/2500.
47RE in a 3500. But will work as a nice upgrade.

I believe. Some others will chime in and let us know if I'm wrong.

Jimmy68 is absolutely correct. The tailshaft of the 2wd is made to accept the splined yoke of the drive-shaft and the 4wd trans tail housing is made to bolt to the transfer case.

No hes not quite correct. Any v8 1500 auto from 96+ will work.
96/97 are direct swap
98/99 need the 97 under model of neutral safety
2000+ need the 97 under nss AND governor sensor/solenoid
2wd need to swap the tailshaft off and bolt up the transfer case

2500/3500 trucks used:
46re with 5.9 v8
47re with v10/Cummins
Nv4500 5spd stick with 5.9 v8, v10, and Cummins
Nv5600 with H.O. Cummins

The 46re's can be directly swapped following the yearly rules i posted above. Nv4500 stick can be swapped if from v8 truck, v10/Cummins need to swap bell housing input shaft and input shaft bearing (? On the bearing) to swap.

This is correct. Ignore first response.

So, yes. I was correct except that a 2wd transmission will work also. Cool.
Nice to see the breakdown and what's required. Apparently any transmission in that year range will work.

47re will NOT bolt up. Period. Internals can be used to rebuild the 46 but the trans itself will not swap
