I have a 2001 Dodge Ram with a comp cam in it new lifters timing chain and gears as well as open headers at the moment, if the truck is in park I can rev and it will go back to idle but the second I put the truck into gear and hit the gas and let off the truck dies. Truck is also idling around 600rmp

Sounds like you need a higher idle to start with? If it's a hotter cam.

how long ago was the cam installed? did you mess with the distributor or have a tune done for the cam?

the distributor don't effect timing. it sets the fuel sync. did you get the fuel sync set after installing the cam? if anything that would be the first place to start. if the fuel sync is not set right it can cause issues like you are having. if that doesn't solve the issue you could have to much cam for the stock tune especially since a 2001 would have come from the factory with death flash.

Do all that could cause it to rev and return to idle perfectly in park and rev fine in drive but not return to idle in drive

Unless you have had the PCM programmed, being a 2001, it has the deathflash. That will cause all sorts of problems with even moderate builds. This is a tuner fix most likely.

A cheap fix would be to cause a vacuum leak. Because we have MAP sensors instead of MAF sensors, fuel economy wont be as severely affected, it will boost your idle rpm slightly and may prevent the stalling issues. The first option being preferable, but this should work until you get it tuned.

I was able to up the idle by the screw in the intake hidden behind the metal cap which needs only punched out with little effort

After unplugging the iac with the truck running I turned it about 5 turns before it even did anything then about 3 more to get it where it is now

These trucks are told where to idle by the pcm. Just buy a tuner and have someone here write you a tune lol.. so what is he adjusting? The throttle ? Wouldn't that make it think it's under part throttle

You really shouldn't adjust that screw. What are your cam specs?

This and this. There's a pretty big difference between an RV cam and something that belongs in an 8,000 RPM drag engine, LOL.

Adjusting screws on a fuel-injected engine aren't meant to be screwed with PERIOD. There's a reason why they press caps into them.

yup. he pretty much just bypassed the iac and adjusted the throttle stop screw until it idled right.

Does it start power enrichment based off the tps? Will the tps see this change? If so wont power enrichment now start as it idles? Another problem I see is if this is set higher than the computers target idle rpm.

Amount of throttle determines power enrichment so to speak so yes tps does play a part. That's why when it's bad you'll often get stumbling at low rpm or idle. Sometimes at idle, even though the iac is functioning correctly the tps may think it's still under part throttle so it dumps the given amount of fuel for the load. Idle is closed loop so it's way too rich and won't correct it. Tap the throttle and introduce air and you're all good.
