Engine's picked up a high-idle problem starting a couple weeks back. At initial startup, it's fine but after driving, when I shift into Park, the engine revs up and holds between 900-1,000 RPM. If I rev it a little bit, it settles back to ~650. So, today, I replaced the IAC thinking this was the problem. Started up the engine and it idled fine, so I let it warm up. Everything seemed fine so I revved it a little. And SOB, the engine stuck at 1,500 RPM for a few seconds and slowly settled to 1,000 RPM again! I know that I fiddled with the throttle body idle screw earlier this year and came up with a ridiculous but plausible theory of how my new headers may have rendered this adjustment obsolete, so I spent the next couple hours backing off the screw, revving the engine and putting the tranny in gear until it idled normally. As of now, I'm a few turns backed off the screw (back to where it originally was...I think) and it idles better overall but it still occasionally holds 1,000 RPM. I noticed that if I'm in the truck and rev the engine, it seems fine but it I go under the hood and directly actuate the throttle blades, especially if I hold it slightly open very briefly, it wants to idle high. WTF?

Gonna go for a drive tomorrow and see what happens. Maybe the ECU hasn't learned the new IAC yet? Christ, how the hell long does it take, LOL. Otherwise, I don't know what the hell to say. I had my scanner plugged in and the TPS showed the same reading when the engine was idling normally and when it was high-idling so I don't think the TB is entirely to blame.

Idk if it's your problem but I had a high idle issue on my 97 and I took the tb off and soaked and cleaned it real good. I even took a small bristle brush and scrubbed where the IAC sits. The iac hole was gummed up and wouldn't let the iac seal properly and it kept a high idle because the iac only works after the motor is warmed up. After I cleaned it including the butterfly because I found out the butterfly wasn't snapping back all the way too (about 140,000 miles worth of grime on both parts) everything ran smooth and beautiful. No more high idle

You have a ported throttle body right? Or a bigger one?

It's a "straight" 50mm. I say straight, because it doesn't have that 50 to 48 taper like OEM.

Truth be told, as long as I've owned the truck, I've always had very intermittent high-idle problems. That includes back when I was still running the OEM, unmodified throttle body. When the issue surfaced, it always seemed to be on hot, humid days. This is what started the whole IAC swap game. I'm currently on my friggin' fourth IAC and the problem continues to linger. I do recall that last winter, I had a cold-start stall problem where I had to hold the throttle open for a minute or two before the engine would idle.

Mmmm....Forest Green

So lately since I'm thousands of miles away and can't tinker with my **** I'm going crazy. When i get home I'll likely be roadtripping the truck from Iowa to San Antonio for my little brother's graduation from basic training. Then I'll be getting the exhaust redone by a shop rather than ******* with it myself anymore with my harbor freight flux core welder and a grinder. Will be going 3" H-pipe duals, Carven TRs, high flow cats and exiting hopefully at the side but may have them go full tailpipe depending on space available. Honestly don't care either way but letting a professional shop see my hack work will certainly be embarrassing.

Also going to be getting a chop saw (finally) and a new Eastwood gas mig welder. My flux core works great and i can actually lay a pretty damn good bead but my needs have surpassed what it can do. Time to step up. I have future plans that include some bracket fabrication and a spool gun.

Also i don't believe I've posted it here but the day i left i bought new heads. EQs and ill have the local head/machine shop Harry's Heads swap the 1.92/1.6 valves to 2.02/1.65 and clean up the castings. Nothing crazy just smooth transitions and runners.

I'm getting friggin stir crazy

Changed the oil today. 2,500 miles on the old stuff, black as hell but the level was still full. At least the oil control is good, LOL. Smelled a bit gassy. New rings on an unpunched, 190,000 mile block. What do ya expect, eh?

And while crawling underneath to pluck the drain plug, I spotted a falling drop. I looked up and I literally went all bug-eyed when I saw Mountain Dew hanging on the balancer. All I could think was "oh mother****er, not ANOTHER coolant leak!" I'm not kidding, this year, once a month, the engine develops a new ****ing coolant leak. After looking around, the leak appears to be coming from the top of the water pump where a short, plastic tube enters with a heater hose attached. Sigh, another leak I gotta sort out. I really hope that I don't have to yank the damned water pump because I'm still red over the PITA that was the Mountaineer's pump a few months back. **** liquid cooling, man, LOL.

Buttoned up and cleaned up the inside of the truck after finishing the install of the Amp Research power steps yesterday.
So nice to not have to hop or climb to get into the truck.

Got the truck back today from the shop today. My steering has sucked for a while and recently started making nasty clunking noises so it was time to get it sorted. Friend of the family, who has done front-end work for decades, took on the job and found that the passenger side tie rod was totally shot along with the steering damper. He replaced those as well as installed my new driver's side axle assembly. The truck steers a hell of a lot better now, not to mention doesn't sound like something is going to snap in half. For the first time in months, I tried the 4x4 and was happy to find that the Posi-Lok wasn't stuck or anything and the 4x4 works perfect. Had the tires rotated as well. The Cooper AT3s are getting pretty down there but I should be able to milk 'em for one more season now that they're rotated. I really need to get a proper set of AT tires (looking at Goodyear Duratracs).

Also, as a bonus, since I was having the tires rotated, I had my new American Racing center caps installed. Finally, after months of rolling around with only two of them in place, I now have four of them. Hated to do it, but I had to go with the plastic ones because the steel ones were bonding to the aluminum rims. Ended up destroying two of the previous ones trying to get them out so the wheels could go on a tire balancer (hence why I only had two of them). Truck looks much more "complete" now.

Little projects to entertain...

Replacing the smashed tube on my front differential guard.

I redid the the spare tire hold down. I was never happy with the original. This is simple and functional.

Lastly the tailgate handle ...painted body color.

I probably won't be wheeling this truck truck anymore either. But it's going to be powder coated sublime, and I believe that will be a nice accent under the truck.

Courtesy of a friend, I got my truck a little level this weekend.

1.5 inches from ORE springs, plus Bilstein 5100s.

Truck rides so much better, firm but not jarring. Found out the front shocks were bout dead, left one was real soft and right was completely toasted. That would explain the jarring ride and bouncing on that side.
