In 02 the 1500 series body style changed, but the 2500 and 3500 series truck kept the 2nd gen body style for one more year...
So any 1500 grill/bumper up to 01 or 2500 or 3500 up to 02 will interchange.
The sport model grill requires a different support frame than the standard grill.
Not sure on the mounting differences between sport bumper and regular...

I have this setup which I am selling that will also work ;)
It is a 4th gen 1500 grill and custom bed lined steel bumper.

Sport grill will only work with sport bumper for 99-01
The sport grill is taller top to bottom and the bumper accomadates this by being shorter in the middle.
The sport grill is also deeper from the leading edge to the honey comb.
Sport headlights require a hole to be drilled in the fender for the turn signal corner piece. It also has way different brackets behind it.
If you have tow hooks and want to keep them you'll need to cut the bumper along the lines molded into the back, or get a sport off road front bumper.

94-96 had different bumper brackets than 97-02.

Are the holes in the bumper the same? If I got a 96 bumper and wanted to put it on a 98 truck, would I just need new brackets, or go with a 98+ bumper?

Yes, just swap out the brackets. Easier to go with a 97+ bumper but pickings are getting slim for good bumpers.

Yep, that's my issue - found a 96 bumper that almost the right color. Its a 98 sport so I didn't want to go with chrome. Guess I'll head back to the salvage yard and look for some brackets. Need to get a battery box and radiator shroud too.
