Headed up to the mountains this weekend for some archery hunting and know it will be some muddy roads and am some what concerned with my tires.

I have new 285/75/16 MT but my spare is the factory 265 size tire and I know with solid axles it's a bad idea to put different sized tires and drive on pavement but how would it be if I used it as a back up in the mountians?

Being as the smaller tires would be able to freely spin more on the dirt/mud road and not break/stress my internal parts in my axle would it be ok to drive on it for a while if need be?

Thanks guys!

I think it might get you out of whatever you're in depending on how heavy it is. You will definitely be stressing your axle on whichever side it's on. I would say if you are going to be running trails then it would be a wise investment to get a spare the same size so you don't have to worry about it.

You should know, you had three size tires on yours lmao

Exactly lol. On my dakota for a while I had a 32x11.5 on one side and a 245/75/16 on the other. This was on the rear.

I think you mean me lol

I did too lol, 275/70/17, 315/75/16 and 285/75/16.

Don't worry about it. Nothings gonna break. You could even use 4x4 offroad and I wouldn't worry.

I loveddd the reactions I got! "Your diffs gonna explode!" "You're gonna destroy that truck!" Lmao, never had any issues with the rear end on that truck. Trans had a computer issue but other that was good for a year after I finally got same size tires for it. I miss that hunk a junk sometimes.

What happens is the speed difference affects LSD clutch's. Also in an open diff the difference causes the spider gears to spin madly constantly like when your cornering. A locker would wig right out.
Clutch's will burn out because of the constant slipping (like in cornering) and spiders can heat up from the constant spinning and introduce heat into the diff. Heat being bad.
Will it screw up? It can but not likely. Go on a cross country trip and very possible. More so the more the tire difference. Like 33 on one side and 30 on the other. Example.
