So, this summer I am going to be repainting the truck. I am on a budget, so I am going to use tractor paint (IH Red, and I like the color anyhow), but I've been debating on how to paint it. I don't know if I should go all red, red with black rockers, or two tone black and red. Or maybe another paint scheme? And definitely getting rid of the chrome panels.

Here it is now after just washing it, sorry, no good pictures of it recently not wet

And here are a couple of different schemes that I was thinking about. Thinking also about a sport conversion, but $$$

2.

3.

Personally I'd go all red with the sport theme. If you can't do it all at once just paint the body all read and paint the grill at the same time. Get to the bumpers whenever you can

What about red on top, a 2inch strip of a light grey/silver (similar to the driftwood satin that often came on these trucks) with black on the rest of the bottom? I plan on eventually redoing mine that way but with my stock green.

Personally I dont like a paint job that looks to busy. I like #2. You could even bedline the rockers and over the fenders.

I'd go #1 and would seriously consider color-matched bedlining the rockers

I have the # 3 paint scheme, and I love it, it's really up to you and how much effort you so choose to put into her. I work at a body shop so planning to repaint mine eventually too!

If you're on a budget, so much so that you're not using the proper paint, why would you even consider the time/energy/money to do a two tone? My reccomendation would be to do all red I n a base/clear, and do it right, once. To do a half ass paint job twice is not going to be cheaper in the long run.

Go down to your local ppg supplier and get a gallon of PR4 red in their omni line and call it a day.

What special about the Omni line? Cheaper?

Correct. A gallon of omni is about $175. I paid $190 for a quart of the PPG deltron that I used on my bumpers this weekend. Matching a 2010? Deltron. Total respray on a 18 year old truck, omni.

Did they rework the Omni formula? I remember a bunch of complaints about it fading fast and not spraying well from a K5 Blazer forum I used to frequent 10ish something years ago

I admittedly do not do it professionally, I'm a hobbyist at best, but it seems to be ok. There is definitely a CLEAR difference in workability and coverage, but the old addage is you get what you pay for.

That being said, I have sprayed entire vehicles with omni and had the job last 5+ years with no issues. I think the case is usually that the people who cut corners on Their product cut corners on their prep as well, and there enlies the problem.

That very could be, though now that I'm thinking of it I seem to recall they discontinued the Omni for awhile back then so they must have reworked it I'd think.

Hmm, I'm still split on which one to do though. I really like #3, but living in Arizona, the black top will make it super hot. And also, I'm afraid of screwing up the paint lines, and it looking like crap.

So I'm still stuck between #1 & #2, and whether or not to do a sport conversion?

Honestly ohiogrown, I actually prefer the IH Red's shade over the stock Dodge red. And also, I've had friends who painted with tractor paint, and it looks professional, so I'm getting them to help a bit this summer. And, I have talked to a lot of people who have painted with both, and they say that the tractor paint will last longer, and be more resistant to scratches. But I do understand what you are saying about half-assed work, so I'm going to really take my time filing the dings and such. I do appreciate the advice though!

When you say tractor paint are you referring to single stage acrylic enamel? If so, it is durable on an implement application, but base clear is much better suited to an automotive application. A minor scratch can be buffed out of clear coat, on single stage it straight into the color. To each his own, it there's a reason why card haven't been painted in single stage for the last 35 years.
