Minimum is 210ft-lbs but the backlash is controlled largely by the pinion shims and the actual pinion vs. ring gear, they are a matched set.

Did you just take it apart to replace seals? or did you replace the pinion/carrier?

To an extent you want some play, otherwise you'll cause excess wear on the pinion and ring gear due to essentially crushing each other. That being said, the desired backlash is miniscule, three thousandths of an inch, which is still detectable by feel and by eye. However the method for measuring is to use a dial indicator and measure on the gear face of the ring gear, not by feeling play in the pinion.

I assume you are rebuilding and have a new crush sleeve, if so the new crush sleeves can be a ***** to get them to start to crush.
Just keep going tighter until you get to 0 slack, then continue very carefully tightening until you get the spec. on turning torque, usually around 35inch pounds turning torque on new bearings.
Never loosen the pinion nut if you go over tight on the turning torque. Start over with a new crush sleeve
