I know many have done this swap but has anyone done a write up? Im looking to swap my old 318 out for that more torque 360... I know depending on years there are balancing issues.. as well as some plug/sensor differences... i have a 2000 318 and the 360 is coming from a 94...

You'll need either the torque converter or the flexplate from the 360, I get confuzzled on which. You'll also need to swap your intake manifold from your 318 to the 360. I'd also make DAMN sure that 360 has real good compression being from a truck 6 years older than yours. You'll also need your PCM set up for a 360 otherwise you'll run the 360 lean since the 318 requires less fuel.

I converted mine to the 360. I put my 318 intake on the 360 and used a 360 flex plate and it was a plug and play deal. I dropped it in, installed the 360 ecu, and plugged my wire harness to it and I've been driving on it since February..... get an ecu from a truck the same year as yours.

I had my old one out and new one installed in 8 hours. From 7 am to 3 pm mainly by myself. My father in law helped pass me the tools I needed lol

I might also add that you're running it on a 96, he has an 00, which will probably **** the PCM off and show that irritation in the odo. lol

Its still. Obd2 pretty much the same. That's why I said put his old intake on the new motor.....intakes between 5.2s and 5.9s are the same. Only some have the evap deal and an extra temp gauge sensor. On the evap that just means he'd have to put the old manifolds on it too.

The engines are the same, option-wise, but yeah, same intake stuff. It's still a good idea to get the PCM programmed for the truck tho, mileage and stuff.

Yea I forgot. They have the digital odo....I'd take a pic of the old odometer and take the old pcm to the dealer with you to make sure they program it for ya.

just to clarify I am planning on using the 94 (or 96 can't remember what year i was told...) motor in the 2000 truck... why the intake swap? I will need to use the 318 manifolds due to the 360s being rusted out... but am told they are the exact same port size... and was also told that running the 360 with the pcm from the 318 will run better (better fuel mileage) than the 360 one due to the tuning of it b/c they turned up the fuel to try and hide the plenum issues.. thoughts?

Intakes are just flat out different due to temp sensors and possible EGR ports.

Manifolds should swap, yes

Make sure the PCM is set up for the 360 otherwise it will run LEAN as hell and ping like a mother. They didn't turn up fuel to hide plenum issues, they turned down ignition timing in the later years to hide those.

Cause the 1997 and older have a center devider that steals power and so you have the proper temp gauge sensor holes......he intakes changed a lil bit. Once you get them off you'll see......the injectors for 318&360 are the same.....so you won't have to go through any injector swapping if they don't work from the 94. Just way easier to unbolt your OEM intake and replace the plenum gasket on the underside the replace the intake gaskets and install your stock intake and it will all plug right up

And transfer all your old sensors and magnetic pickup in the distributor. To the360 if you want a plug and play.
