Hi folks, first pick-up and first Mopar here. But years of experience with doing everything. to cars. Neighbor had a '98 1500 QC 4X4 auto 170k on the clock good frame and body (rare up here) for $100 cause of blown 5.2. See picture attached, to get this thing on the road relatively cheap should I get a used 5.2, or since I am swaping 5.9 her? Also have a fathe r in law offering free 383!

383 Mopar? If so, that'd be pretty cool but as I imagine it is carborated it would be a little difficult trying to get everything to work properly.

If you plan on using it alot, I would just throw a 318 at her, a very easy and straightfoward swap.

5.2 is 318?

Ya the Mopar 383 is carbed. Now when you say 318 you mean Magnum 5.2 correct. Not a 318 A or older motor? What year ranges have same sensors? I belive Magnum 5.9/360 is same block, would a 5.9 Magnum be plug and play in my truck?

Yeah 318 magnum you can do a 360 magnum but I would get a 98-01 motor. The 383 would be cool I have thought of that idea or even a 440 if it would fit. Put a 440 in a 79 dodge 1/2 ton once it was a blast.

Big block would be a **** because it would need a lot of fab work, fuel system, ignition everything.

5.2 magnum would be a direct swap and 5.9 nearly a direct swap.
94-95 5.2 magnum would require the use of flexplate that is currently on the blown engine and to swap intake and exhaust manifolds from blown engine.
94-95 5.9 magnum would need a 96+ 5.9 flexplate and swap blown engine intake and exhaust manifolds.
96-99 5.2 would be a direct swap.
96-99 5.9 would just need the correct flexplate.
2000+ 5.2 would need fuel rail and injectors swapped.
2000+ 5.9 would need fuel rail and injectors and the flexplate swapped.

No A series or LA engines are going to be an option. It would be the same thing as the big block swap bit with less power potential than either the magnum or big block.

Thanks for the great info!

That is a great run down. Now someone said need Torque Converter off 5.9 is that true? Also what what about the PCM. I think it is in Pass firewall. Do I need that off 5.9 truck?

'01 5.9

Ok found a 5.9 out of '01 160,000 miles 6 month warranty. But will injectors and fule rail off my 5.2 work or I need 96-99 5.8 injectors? Its out of a 2500 van, still work.

Torque converter is a no. 96+ use the same unit for both 5.2 and 5.9.
Thank you for bringing up the pcm, I had a brainfart while posting the year stuff above and forgot to include it. PCM is in fact programmed differently between the 2. They have different fuel trims on account of displacement and marginally different cam profiles. 5.2 pcm will run a 5.9 a tad lean and vice versa so you will need the correct year/engine/trans combo pcm.

Yep injectors and fuel rail from the 5.2 will work. 5.2/5.9 use the same rail/injectors, only difference is based on year. 94-99 use EV1 connector, black injectors. 00-02 use the red, pencil, EV6/USCAR style.
Easiest way is going to be using the Ford fuel line disconnect tool to disconnect the fuel line before the rails and then swap over the intake manifold/rail/injectors as a whole unit. This is ALSO the perfect time to do the plenum fix and port the runners should you so desire to.

Take the out all the bolts holding the alternator/ac bracket out and swing it over to the passenger side of the truck and tie it up with bungee straps or wire or something. Take the one off the new engine and ditch it or hold onto it for spares
