I just picked up a 96 indy pace truck, the PO had a supercharger on it. He had a small fire under the hood that burned the computer harness. So I bought the truck without the supercharger he wanted to keep it. So my question is what years of harness will work. The PO said only 96 harness will work. But these rams came with the 5.9 magnum right till 2001. So I don,t want to go to the wreckers and spend all the time getting the wrong year. Or could this be sourced elsewhere? Thank you for any advice.

Dapepper will be able to tell you exactly, but any harness from 95-01 will work to connect all the engine components, with some connector modifications here and there.

The real problem is in the main harness connectors, those did change a bit between sub generations.

96-97 harnesses are just about the same. 98-99 are slightly different, i'm not sure if the main harness connectors changed, but the PCM connectors should be the same. The 00-01 harness are slightly more different still, i'm certain the main harness connectors are different on these years, but you should be able to cut and splice the old connectors on the newer harness if you absolutely must.

So I went down to the Dodge dealer today, and they do Not list a harness for 96 trucks. I thought that was weird. I guess its the wrecking yard next.

Ok I have an update on the wiring harness. I located one from a 96 at the wreckers. Just wondering what tools I should bring. And what all does the harness attach to when it drops in behind the engine? I,m going to be laying in the dirt and would like to be as efficient as possible when I get there. It,s a 20 mile drive over there. Thanks for your help.

It goes to a spot under the body of the truck, kinda in the wheel well and forward of the door. Bog connector there that runs to some interior things and rear end for taillights and stuff

So I got the harness for my truck, and I discovered a few differences between the 96 and 97 harness. There was a97 sitting beside the 96 that I got the harness from. The TPS are different. The injectors are different. And also the intakes are a bit different, right at the front where the thermostat is. The 96 uses 2 small sensors, while the 97 only 1.

96 and 97 both use 2 sensors for the coolant temp. Injectors were exactly the same 94-99 and changed to the red style in 00.

So heres the 96 old grey ones, and the red ones on the 97, see the diff. Also see the 2 coolant sensors on the 96. The 97 only had 1.

The build date on the 97 was 6/97. why would it have 00 or 01 injectors. Cause the plugs are obviously different.

Check the sides of the block for casting numbers. Likely a cab swap, somebody may have swapped injectors and spliced new connectors in or something along those lines

And another thing I have to deal with. I don,t have the AC compressor for the truck. I notice the diagrame on the radsupport shows a no Ac belt. Do you have a part # for that belt? Thanks

If you dont physically have the compressor installed, this is the correct length belt.

What clip are you referring to on the wiring harness? There is no easy way to pull an engine harness. Its not hard, just time consuming.

The best way to pull the harness is to move one section at a time and try to find the place where it seems to be stuck instead of pulling until it comes loose. You'll have 4 or 5 connections on and near the transmission. The biggest issue will be separating the harness non-destructively from fused power. You can cut the wires and splice them into yours, but you'll want to make sure you record the amperage of each wire, or download the factory service manual from the DIY section and reference that when putting the harness in your truck if you go the cut and splice route. It won't be any fun to have another engine fire due to improperly sized fuses.

When I say front clip, I mean rad support, fenders and the rest of it. On my 79 truck I pulled the entire front clip off in an afternoon

Getting the radiator, AC condenser, radiator crossmember out is easy. You can have it done in 20 minutes. The fenders will take a bit longer, but not more than an hour for both. The bumper is going to take the longest if you don't have an impact handy. Without it shouldn't take more than an hour and a half to get it and the mounts off. With an impact I got mine off in about 30 minutes.

Ya thanks, that's what I wanted to know. It will make putting this harness in a lot easier with out all that stuff in the way. Plus then I can clean things up to get this thing looking half decent again. This is what I picked up.

The non-ac equipped trucks used a different alt bracket though. Factory replacement no ac belt will not work for you. Dudeman posted a good pn
