96 ram 1500, 5.9L. Yesterday It was cold and raining with the heater on. But I could hear my ac compressor kicking in and out every 30 seconds or so. Trying to figure this one out. Thanks for your help.

The A/C compressor will run in any A/C setting, as well as any defrost setting. This is to cool the air in the cool settings, and dry the air in the defrost setting to defog the windshield. This is normal in all but the floor, floor/face, and face settings.

I always wondered about that too when I have the defroster on.

And for anyone wondering, the reason why the compressor comes on even with the defroster is for two reasons: 1, it makes sure the compressor has oil cycling through it every once in a while so it doesn't fail prematurely and 2, the A/C actually pulls a bit of moisture out of the air, thus allowing the defroster to defog the windows.
