Not the house kind the motor kind.

The father inlaw just got his 2500 back from the shop after having a whole new crate motor installed. Now the ol' man and his son are a little impatient. The son is a diesel mechanic and thinks he knows it all. But that beside the point.

He got it back on saturday last week. So it has been back for a total of 6 days and not even 100 miles on the new engine. He is already planning on doing some towing and hauling.

I told him NO WAY you should do it that soon. He said it will be fine. I told him no it won't you need to finish the break in and in about 1k miles start to tow. I have a bad feeling he won't listen and tear up his motor too soon.

Any body think I'm wrong for trying to make him wait? What do you think is proper break in for a brand new crate motor?

I've always heard that at least 500 - 1000 miles is a good break in period

Thats what I was always told. But then seen where factory motors are broke in at the factory. Didnt know if it was the same in a crate motor

Either way, I wouldn't want to risk a brand new motor

I agree. But he wont listen. His excuse is that its not that heavy. Well its still more than the truck. Trailer is in at about 4 k empty.

I got to be honest here I have never worked on or rebuilt the black smoke motor BUT on a gas engine, IF the first break in is done right, you can pull/haul/race it with in a day or two. The only reason you wait that long is for a couple of good test drives/runs to check for leaks, noise, double check everything. But I have finished builds before and had the car on track with only 1 or 2 miles on engine. Granted it had a couple of hours of break in on it, no set rpm, vary throttle, use break in oil, change break in oil, etc.

Ok but since it wasn't put in by us I have no idea of knowing what was done prior to install.

Is it a diesel? I was told on the new diesel we bought that breaking it in was towing and working it right off the bat.
