Even if you did that they would still be a crap catcher. If you want something to shield your wires get these Spark Plug Wire High Heat Boot Protector Cover 8 Cyl Engine 1200 Degree USA Made | eBay or equivalent
Yes - it takes them getting lined up properly to do it.
Just put some anti-seize around them to make it easier.

Don't put em back in. You don't need them at all and they just impede maintenance and drop rust in the hole

is this good advice? i removed mine as i was forced to, my socket would not fit on spark plug.
