Hey guys, if I'm swapping a 5.9L out of a 1998 into my 1995 Ram 1500 4x4, do I need to cut the weight off the torque converter? Engine swap is done and running but vibration has me worried.

1995 uses a weighted tq converter. 98 uses weighted flexplate. Which flexplate did you use?

I used the flex plate that came with the newer engine. I figured the internals were balanced to it since there were weights on it.

Yes sir, I never removed the torque converter. Didn't even think about it being given an issue until I got it running and noticed the vibration.

OK. So I'm at peace with the fact the transmission has to come out, but then would you suggest grinding the weight off the converter, or just buying a newer neutral balance converter with the symmetrical bolt pattern? Or something else. Thanks.

If the trans is a recent build, I don't see why you couldn't put a higher stall after market converter in it

Thank you sir. I'll report back with my findings. I'm determined to only have to shimmy the transmission back a couple of inches; just enough clearance to swap the flex plates. Think I can thread some longer bolts in as guides.

That I can definitely do, but doing so won't screw with the balance of the 98 engine?

As Dapper said, it shouldn't. It should cancel the weighted torque converter, however you could always get a better torque converter. Personally, I wouldn't go with very much higher stall than the factory 1400rpm. It will get you a little more pulling power at takeoff, but will hurt your mileage slightly until it locks up in either 3rd or 4th gear.

Thanks for the replies but it's just our old farm truck, trying to get this accomplished as inexpensively as possible. Been a good one though, been driving it since 1999.

The flex plate swap worked perfectly. Thanks for the advice gentlemen. Now I just gotta figure out why it smells so rich. I'm thinking maybe an air bubble in the system is dickering with the coolant temp sensor because the heat isn't working either, and the converter won't lock. Time to burp the system.
