I have a 98 ram 5.9L If I slowly rev the engine to around 2,000rpms i get a pretty loud grind noise coming from.. im wanting to say the engine compartment area? We havent been able to pin point where its coming from, even laying under the truck we cant tell, it just sounds like its coming from the front end somewhere.. It does it while driving, in park, and in neutral. It doesnt do it everytime. I have taken the Belt off and revved up and it still does it, so im thinking that rules out a pulley? any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

Also.. I notice at around 50mph it kinda chugs a little bit, and was wondering if maybe the Torque Converter was going out, If it were.. would it make noise contently or intermittently ?

Video maybe? Lots of things that can grind, one possibility is something got into the bellhousing and is hitting the torque converter. Or a bearing somewhere is going.

Does this noise have a metallic hollow sound that sounds like it could be grinding or a rattling noise?

One of the first possibilities is the dust cover plate on the trans. Pull it and the starter off then reinstall starter and try again. Likely it either goes away or the pitch/tone changes. Ether way you'll at least be able to rule out that area

It really sounds like a spun bearing. It could be several different bearings,I.e. Front main, rear main, cam, etc etc... Take a long screw driver or a short broom stick and listen around to narrow down where its comming from.

Did you notice the trans cooler lines freaking out when the noise started? That noise very well could be a pump sucking air (sounds exactly like a power steering pump thats sucking air or fluid mixed with air).

Check your trans fluid level, then check the power steering fluid for air bubbles while or right after this is happening.

I just noticed it when i watched the video, my trans fluid is at normal level, i'll check the power steering pump for bubbles when i get home, what would be the fix if there is air in the lines?

Its likely low on fluid if there's air in the lines, or the pump shaft is damaged and the seal is letting air in.

ok, are we talking about the pump inside the trans, or the power steering pump?

I just revved the truck up and had someone watch the power steering fluid and there was no change when the noise started, my trans fluid is at the right level.. not sure what else to check, could it be a bad flex plate? i'm not sure what they sound like when bad..

Flex plate is not gonna make a ton of noise unless something is stuck in it. Seeing as those lines are definitely correlated to the noise, i'd say trace the vibration. Follow the lines to see what they're touching. Something is grinding, be it a bearing or gears. I've seen it a couple times on a specific type of starter, where the pinion vibrates its way into the ring gear and grinds on it.

I don't see at all where the op indicated the power steering correlated

I'm still here before internals are checked

ok, so i pulled the starter off while the truck was running (risky i know) i wanted to eliminate the starter all together, it still made the noise, took dust cover off, all flex plate bolts where tight, put starter back on, dust shield is tight. I took my trans cooler lines off and started the truck to make sure i had no blockage and it shot out like a rocket.. thats about as far as ive got so far

So i took it to a Danco transmission shop near me, they checked it out and said it was something in my Transfer Case.. So my question is.. would it make the grinding noise in park and still be the transfer case? I wouldnt think the transfer case would make noise not moving
