I got a 98 1500 that had a 5.9 its the second motor thats been in it and had to be removed after only 70k on the second cause of bad thrush bearing and 5 burnt valves. So I want to know Ive been given a 92 ram van with a 318 magnum motor can I swap this in and still pass OBD inspections and if so could I swap in a CDI? Dont really want to pay for a used 5.9 and have to have it rebuilt to get any reliablity. I can get the same truck for around 2000 to 4000 but would have the same problems. Any suggestions would be greatly app. I will be joining the army in Jan so have to do something. Im a very capable mech. but on a so what tight budget.

I don't believe that your 5.9 ECM will run the 92 because of the lack of sensors and differences in the motor. Your gauges will also most likely not work for oil pressure and what not since I believe the 92 engines were more manual. But that's a guess.

You could use the 92 5.2 as a long-block but thats about it. Don't forget that each motor is balanced differently (5.2 vs 5.9).

ok i got the torque converter from the 5.2 but the 92 acually has all the exact sensors just need a ecm. What would be involved in turning the 5.2 into a 5.9 I know that the heads are exactly the same? and could i use junkyard crank pistons etc?
