Hi guys, brand new here to the forum. I have a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4.
My problem is I have great heat when driving, but when I stop at a traffic light or stop sign, the air gets cool. I checked the coolant level and it is full. I was told it might be a thermostat or maybe even a heater core issue. Can someone help?

Ok...

So double check your coolant temp and make sure the thermostat is reaching it mark. Like if you got a 180*F it shoulf be close 178-182*F typically on cold days.

Then withe engine fully warmed up and heater on high check the coolant hoses to and from the heater core. If there is temp difference there is good flow of coolant. If both hoses are hot then the heater core is plugged up and not flowing good.

You might have to check the blend door motor for proper function too.

Id lean toward the heater core- 99- 100K?
Sounds like a flow issue. check the hoses for temp difference?

It has 128k miles on it. Thank you for the replies guys. I will look into it. Is the heater core something I can do myself or should I seek help? Can I wait to change it out or will I risk something really going wrong?

is your dash cracked at all?

if so, there is a good chance it will be ruined when you remove it to replace the heater core.

from what I have read, it is not difficult, just very time extensive

if you do not require to use the heater, you can bypass it with the heater hoses.
you will have no heat though.

Thanks again for the replies. My dash is pretty non-existant. The previous owner had a bit of road rage one day and smashed the hell out of it. lol. A few more broken pieces won't hurt it anymore.

5/8" female garden hose end-
pull BOTH heater hoses off the nipples @ firewall, hook hose to one side and flush... should remove blockage
Hook back up and run- purge air from system and enjoy heat again...
