Is the transmission on the 2nd gen ram trucks prone to going bad? I've been hearing rumors that it's prone to having a bad transmission. Is this true or is it all about changing the fluid?

There are a couple of reasons they go bad, but yes they are horrible about it. Firstly, oil and filter changes every 20-30K miles, investing in a pan with a drain plug as well as a remote filter makes it much easier. Then there is a check valve in the cooling line heading to the radiator, its right up by the radiator. Pull that apart and punching the ball out will prevent it from gumming up and sticking closed. Lastly, get and aftermarket transmission cooler and install that to help keep the trans cool, they really dont like heat.

Get a transmission temp gage too, I have them on both my flatbed and lowered ram. It will save your trans. One of the best investments for my trucks at least, there is a guide for install on the forum too.
