Put a thin layer on the side that goes to the valve cover and none on the engine side and put the gasket on the valve cover. Let it set up a little before install. Makes it easier to install and remove as the gasket stays lined up and attached to the cover.

Edit: and DON'T over-tighten.

Edit: and don't ask me how I know this.

2nd gens just need a good rubber gasket. Don't need sealant with the good even 10bolt system they use. Old LA engines you definitely needed it.

When I did my valve service, I used felpro gaskets, I only put the thinnest layer on the valve cover side to hold them in place. Otherwise, you dont really need anything. Torque specs are a must, or you will crush the gasket and end up with leaks.

95 in-lbs is the target mark.

Also, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask, then screw up.

All done and nothing exploded so I didn't do too bad. No oil blowing anywhere at least and it sounds like it might even idle better. Like I always say; If no one comes back from the future to stop you, how bad of a mistake can it be?

On to the next problem...

It idles better because you replaced the valve cover gasket?

Personally, I dont use RTV on valve cover gaskets.

Also, I have seen instances where a tattered valve cover gasket caused a vacuum leak.
