Everything that I have been told as a kid is getting changed or turning out to be wrong. First it was putting new tires on the back, when I always have been putting them on the front. Now that the tailgate up is more fuel efficient, WTH. lol

Yea I really dont care what Mythbusters or anyone else says.. Im the one putting fuel in my truck, I run at least 75 mile a day and that is just back and forth to work. One week I left it up and got 254 miles (i fill up at 1/4 tank) the next week I left it down and got 283 miles.. same fuel shell 93, same route.. to each their own but that is my findings..

I'd test a few more times to confirm it...how do you know that s
Day 1 you didnt have a headwind or 1000 other variables that could account for the loss on MPG- a one time happenstance like that doesn't mean anything

For school I travel about 60 miles there and back and I got slightly better mileage with my tailgate up. It just physically makes sense when pressure and resistance are taken into account...in my mind I guess lol

What you need is a set of large vertical fins in place of the tailgate to smooth the trailing wake. The smoother you slip through the air, the better!

How about a Cummins Diesel, topper and ScanGauge II...

Cmg = Today's MPG
Tmg = Total MPG for the Tank
