Ok so I have had trouble since July 4th weekend, I don't drive my truck at all so it hasn't been an issue, but we are looking at going camping again soon and need it to pull the trailer.
It does not want to shift to 3rd after it has warmed up, usually around 20-30 mins. I have taken it to a tranny shop and he hooked up his computer thing. Said 2nd is sending the signal, but 3rd is not receiving it. Says could be the units themselves or there could be some material clogging it. They need to drop the pan to determine whats next.

Anyone else have issues like this before and your solution? Trying to prepare myself for a couple hundred dollar bill or the big $$$ bill of a new tranny.

Luke ya can drop the pan and see how bad it looks in not alot of time. If you trust the shop then you can use them and save yourself from having to buy trans fluid twice.

I have never done a pan drop, how much does it usually cost for new fluid, and filter doing it myself? I can just use basic fluid to refill for now rather than synthetic

Tony and Mark would be the best one to tell you about the stuff on your trans to be certain.

OK so I am going to drop the pan and change the filter out, hoping maybe its just a clogged filter, but will be looking at the stuff inside.
What bad stuff do I look for besides metal shavings? Is there any part I could unbolt and just clean up that would cause problems?

So I went out to take the pan off to let it drain over night. Either I got REALLY strong or the bolts were not tight, more like hand tightened, and I found one missing too. Would that cause it to mess up, or should I still just drop it?
I want to let it sit overnight to get the most drainage.

some metal on the magnet is normal

wierd swirls in the fluid may be water or some other fluid

From what I can tell from the fluid on the bottom of the trans, it looks good to me. What did you drain the fluid into? We're there any different colored swirls in it?

Nope no discoloration. just red metallic. No bigger pieces of metal either.

Is that too much metal on the magnet?

Been reading some too. Thoughts on governor pressure solenoid

Looks fine to me. We've changed the fluid in mine twice since I've had it and it looks just the same. Metal shavings are normal since it's just normal wear and tear. As long as there aren't huge chunks of metal then your fine. The filter might be the reason it wasn't shifting. Also just cause, make sure your transmission relay is good, about a month or two ago I pulled mine out without knowing and it threw it into limp mode. Without a good signal, these transmissions are pretty much useless. A new relay is like $10-15 bucks at autozone. Good luck hope it works out

That fluid looks fine. Do you have a new filter for it?

I will be picking that up tonight. My softball game is right by the parts store.

Dave I am trying to try some cheaper fixes to see if thats it. But if not I may get with ya for the number. My dad has friend that builds cummins pulling trucks and does trannys too so he may get it.

I can't speak to the 2nd gen, but I know on the third gens they do all sorts of crazy stuff when the filters get plugged.

Also, install a drain plug on that thing and if you need to drop the pan again in the next week or so you can reuse the fluid.

Yeah I wanted to install a drain plug too while I am at it. This should make for a fun evening, as I am trying to get it back for a show on Wednesday.

From another site (terry aka tactransman) was told could be the direct drum seals, which requires an overhaul boooo

I've got a fluid and filter change coming up for mine. Hoping that'll solve my problems...
